Why does my car backfire?
When I romp on it and then let off the gas, my car backfirse pretty loud and sometimes shoots out flames. This only started recently. What could this be? could it be my fuel pressure is set to high? plugs? i have no idea and I wana get this fixed because I dont like flames coming out my pipes so please help...thanks

Sounds like the timing could be off, a rich condition, or a vacuum leak. Your obviously not burning enough HC off or else you wouldn't have the problem. Either your plugs are gonners or your getting too much fuel. Check to see were your timing is at also. Header leak is a big possibility. Do you still have A.I.R??

it is either the plugs, because they are old, or it could be a header leak. I havent checked the bolts in a while since i put them back on so they might be loose. How does a header leak cause backfire. Also, i reloved my car and there is a small leak down there but I dont think that could be it because that has been like that for years. So it could be a header leak?

when i still had my 5.0 thunderbird i had that same problem when i put on dual exhaust and took out the cats. so i changed to the bocsh single platium plugs and went one step higher in temp and it never back fired again. so you might just want to try new plugs.

pushrods shouldn't tick, lifters may, sounds like you may have some exhaust leaks..

The reason an exhuast leak causes backfiring is because Hydrocarbons (fuel) need oxygen (and spark or high heat) to burn (or break the bond between the Hydrogen and carbon). There is a lack of oxygen usually in an exhuast system but with a header leak providing oxygen and plenty of heat the gas explodes resulting in the backfire you hear.

well that exhaust thing makes a lot of sense actually so I am gona check all my exhaust for leaks and check the plugs and I am sure it will be all set thanks
Actually, what you are describing is "afterfire", not "backfire". True backfire occurs when the popping is in the intake tract, not the exhaust. Either way, you are running a rich exhaust from either incomplete combustion excessive fuel. Fix the exhaust leaks first, then gfo from there. If you are still using an oxygen sensor, the exhaust leaks will contribute to a rich mixture condition.

ok I tightened up my headers and brought my fuel pressure back up. There is one more exhaust leak where one header connects to the y pipe. It still backfires and now is sometimes sluggish under light acceleration. I ordered plugs and I am going to look into a new dirstibuter cap and rotor? anything else that could be wrong with it?
