rear seal

hey i was wondering how much it would take to fix my oil leak, i think its comming from the rear main seal, but not to sure. i was wondering if i could leave the engien in the car to fix it, and what i would need, thanks.

it'd help us all a bit if you took the time to say what engine you have. good chance the engine wouldn't have to come out, but the trans would. it also might be a good idea to find the leak before you jump into it.

Yeah..your right ede, engine type would help. If it is a one piece your laughn' What year would help too.

I have always used the rule of thumb here. If it is your rear seal...I would just go ahead and replace the oil pan gasket and all. After all it is going to begin to leak soon anyway. Domino effect. Once the one start they all start. Just the way I do things, don't like having to do things twice. That's all.

well its a 1985 chevy 350ci, driver side dip stick, it was out of a 1/2 ton 4X4 truck. what else do you all need to know?

If it is the rear main seal and if the engine is 1986 or older you should have a 2 piece rear main seal and the motor wont have to come out. From what you have described from the dip stick placement. Yours has a 2 piece main seal.
