Head Gasket

Does anyone know the stock thickness of headgaskets for 305 TPI engines. Courious to know how much will be needed to mill for Vortec's.

.040, why would anything have to be milled to run vortec heads?

MY, ede, you've NEVER heard of milling Vortec heads for use on a 305?

You ARE behind the times!

I have a 305, 58cc heads. If I convert to Vortec's, with their 64cc chambers, I need to compensate for the compression loss. If stock gaskets are .040, I just need to play with my Dyno2000 to figure what it would be with .015 gaskets. (I hear these do exist), I figure if I can keep around 9:1 (stock is 9.5:1), I'll be ok.

.015 is in my opinion too thin of a gasket, it's just a metal shim and can blow out. If you're going to get the heads milled anyway, just mill them enough so you have the desired compression with a .040 gasket

I was actually hoping to avoid the cost and possible alignment problems of having the heads milled. Also gives me the extra benny to use them on a future 350 swap.

never cared about doing anything with a 305 to bother learning, guess i know now. i'd worry more about establishing the correct quench then raising the compression a tenth or two.

Stock 305 gaskets are not .040. They are somewhere between .016 and .019. Do a search, you'll find the correct number.
