is it time for a tune-up?

my 88 T/A has been acting up on me. it hesitates at lights right when i hit the gas, it gulps and then realizes im on the gas. also, i have gone to start it a couple times within the past 3 months and 2 times it would cough and choke and then die. i would wait a couple min, give it some gas, and then start it and let the idle smooth out. What is it doing? is it time for plugs, wires, cap, & rotor? or could it be sumthing else such as timing?

When was the last tune up? If you didn't do one when you got the car, probably a good time to do so.

not sure when the last one was, but it does have '7MM high-performance' wires on them so i assume that it has had a tune up before i owned it.

If i did a tune-up, how does this setup sound?

AC Delco RapidFire Plugs
Accel/Taylor/ or Bosch Wires.....which ones?
Accel cap/rotor

save your money on some of the brand name stuff, heres what i put onto my car:

AC plugs RC45TS (I think)
MSD 8 MM wires
AC cap and rotor
AC Ignition coil
AC oil filter
K&N Air filter

I've heard good and bad things about accel from members on this board so thats up to you, good luck

do a tuneup first to rule those things out, at this point it could be a number of things, might as well fix the easy things first to get them out of the way and then you can tackle some other causes of the problem. keep us notified

i did the plugs it helped dont get the rapidfires they are a waste of money. I still have issues, i think its a combo of the timing and old ignition stuff cause sometimes it runs good sometimes it dont inconsistant.

I had the same exact problem with my 87 2.8. It drove me nuts.... I though EGR..nope.. o2....nope.... plugs etc.... nope... then i unplugged my MASS air sensor... and there it was full power no hesitation. good idle. It seems that it was bad and it was leaning out my fuel too much.. I hope this is your problem also.

good luck
