Hey guys need a little advice here.
I am new to cars(only 16) and this is the first time Ive ever done anything under the hood.
Im changing the starter which is going out.
Im looking for any advice anyone can give me about this job.
Any advice about any car repair info would be great.

Invest in some sort of manual. Try to stay away from Haynes especially for a 92. Chiltons is decent but Helms is the way to go.

Since you're replacing the starter now would be a good time to upgrade to a high torque mini starter.

It's under the hood, but you'll only open the hood to get light through. Disconnect the battery, then the wiring on the starter solenoid. Make sure you know where each wire goes. In my experience it's difficult to screw up because each wire has the proper size connecter for where it goes. Now would be a good time to put a heat shield on your solenoid, they can be found for less than ten bucks in the red help! section of many stores. Take out the few bolts in the starter, and try to pull it out past the exhaust. (not sure how difficult this will be, my exhaust was different). Install is reverse of removal. If you encounter any problems, we're here to help.

 

I did mine in my V8 '92 Camaro. I assume it is the same in the 92 V8 Firebird. The starter will come past the exhaust with no problem. You will have to use an extension on your ratchet and go between the exhaust pipes for one of the bolts. It is an easy fix. You should have no trouble.

 

The biggest advice I can give you is replace the starter with a remanufactured AC Delco starter, you will pay a little more but you won't be changing it back out again in 2 weeks, every two weeks, the cheap starters at AutoZone or PepBoys or Advance or any autoparts store are JUNK even the life-time warrantee ones.Oh yeah, watch out for any shims that might be between the starter and the engine, some engines came from the factory that way and they need to be put back like they were.

i just did it on my 91 about a week ago.... the best advice is have a friend there to hold the starter for you. in all reality that thing must weigh 20 or more lbs. multiply that by 3 because you are upside down under the car and you have added up quite a bit of weight. and mine didnt have a shim, yours may be different though
