AFR vs other heads
i'm thinking of getting new heads down the road. i was wondering how good AFR heads are compared to other heads like dart and pro topline. are dart and pro topline heads good? how much will an AFR 195 head flow. i see that pro topline 200cc heads flow 278cfm, at what valve lift is that measured at?
how good do dart and AFR heads flow?
with a 350 what is the biggest runner sive i would want to go with to keep the velocity up for good trq and about 6000rpm max? how about a 283?

I believe the Pro Lightnings by Top Line are at a .700 lift, but the heads flow great... I bought a set, and should be getting the car started up soon, but still need to order a new carb, before I test it out.
I think a 200cc is pushing it on a streetable 350.

ahhhh
i think anyone on here that has afrs can tell you that for flow vs $ theyr'e the best.....
and i'll agree to that, but i can point out some things i don't like about afrs.....
1: cheap springs
2: cheap rocker studs
3: it's hard to use stock head bolts because of the way the heads are machined, they are really made for a 12 point bolt
4: i think the valve cover rails need to be raised and made to fit better
besides that, they are a really good company, and i also noticed that alot of ford advertisers like dss are using afr's now instead of the canfields on their hp long blocks... and canfields used to be the big bad ford head for 302's and such just a few months ago....
it kinda makes ya think......

The afr 190s and 195s seam to be designed specifically for street strip cars. The flow numbers are awesome at low lifts. Here are the numbers according to chevy high performance:
AFR 190 heads
in. ex.
.300 208 157
.400 244 188
.500 262 202
.600 261 211
Here is what they got for Sprotmas IIs 200cc
.300 187 131
.400 225 150
.500 240 164
.600 243 162
And Pro Action 220 cc head
in ex
.300 161 132
.400 207 160
.500 239 176
.600 257 187
The AFRs flow much better at the lower lifts. And since most street cams are below .500 inches they probably are the best bet for the street. But from what I have seen they are at least twice the price of these other iron and even some alluminum heads. But if you have the money and don't mind dealing with delays and making sure all the appropriate holes are drilled and maybe replacing bad springs then the AFRs would be the way to go.

I also have the topline pro lightning heads and they are a very nice piece of iron. AFR has very nice heads as well but are expensive like any aluminum head is but thats the only thing going for them. my heads outflow them on the .500 lift but outflow mine on bottom and are about $400 dollars more then mine. GM vortec heads outflow afr 190 on bottom but AFR takes over very quickly but vortec's are only $500 and have been proven to make 450hp with a good cam. the best way to find good heads is to do research and look at proven engine combo's and what you want to do with your car.

A 283 will need to be spun pretty high rpm's to get the benefit of these hi flow heads.
Port volume is critical on a small cubic inch motor like the 283.
Especially on a street motor where torque and throttle response is important.
Bigger is not nessessarily better.
You actually have good hi perf heads already but need to
improve them with porting etc.
Some thing with a port volume around 165 to 175 cc would be about right for a mighty 283.

i like the 041s right now. i was just thinking of better heads if i got a 350 or 400. i was surprised at how much torque i got with these heads for a 283.

AFR's are great but I hear alot that they aren't neccessary and others will do almost or as good as they will for alot less money.
