You need to unplug the connector on the passengers side firewall harness. It's tan w/ a black stripe. Then connect the timing light to #1 wire and battery terminals

2) What should timing be set to????? 5 degrees BTDC????

The odd numbered cylinders go from 1 to 7 on the driver's side and ascend in order going from the front of the engine towards the firewall; the passenger's side does the same thing, except that it has all of the even numbered cylinders.

Or, to be more visual...

{ FIREWALL }
..(8).............(7)..
..(6).............(5)..
..(4).............(3)..
..(2).............(1)..
{ FRONT OF ENGINE }

As for what the timing should be set to, there should be a label attached to the underside of the hood towards the front that says what the timing should be set to.

holmes677: I should know this... I'm pretty sure that advanced is towards the passenger's side and retarded is towards the driver's side. Either way, it should say on the timing cover (positive numbers are advanced and negative numbers are retarded).

When viewed from the front, the engine rotates clockwise. You can figure out the rest.

well....I finally decided to time my engine.... yeah I know this post is at least 6 months old. I only drive the car on weekends and Im always getting side tracked with other car projects...

Anyway.. I hooked up my timing light to the battery, connected the lead to #1 cylinder and the timing mark jumps a lot. Yes..I did disconnect what I believe is the E.S.T. Connector. Is the E.S.T connector different colors for different years because mine is just Tan...no stripe. Is this normal for the timing mark to "jump around" a lot or does this mean the chain has a lot of play in it???
