Messing with that IAC is a pain in the @$$. Trust me. I have had serious idle issues with my car. I have had nothing but trouble working on that damn thing. Granted my level of experience in such matters was very limited before tearing that mess apart. TPI engines suck to work on and troubleshoot. Unfortunatley I have no real usefull information for you.

Diggler,

According to your web pages, the car has TPI. That makes a bit of difference.

I don't have that much trouble accessing the IAC motor on mt '86 engine. If you remove the air intake bellows and upper alternator bracket, there is plenty of space.

yeah, i didnt want to remove that upper alternator bracket, but looks like i may have to... may be easier in the long run than trying to get at it otherwise... thanks vader...

87ws6- i replaced the iac in my old 87 (took me FOREVER) and it made a world of difference. the original was so old it was breaking apart.

Recently replaced my IAC. Now I have a high idle problem but that's another issue.

To remove the IAC without destroying anything I found the best method was to remove the throttle body. I bought a throttle body gasket kit from a parts store, cleaned up the throttle body while it was off and put it all back together. No stalling with the AC anymore...

What would happen if, say, the IAC pintle on a TPI car was stuck all the way in (valve closed, no air flowing)? Would it immediately die every time it tries to idle?

I would think that would depend on where your minimum throttle position is set (screw on the driver side of TB). Mine will run with the IAC fully extended, but then mine doesn't idle correctly anyway.
