can anyone with a 305 TPI post a pic of their engine
can anyone with a 305 TPI post a pic of their engine
i want to be sure i hooked up all my emissions components and hoses up correctly so can anyone with a 305 TPI please post a closeup shot of their emmisions hoses?? i think that could be another reason my cars acting strange and my haynes manaual didnt have a good diagram at all.

It is almost always a pleasure to see how thirdgenners fuss over their engine compartments
ok i just got this done right before all the wierd stuff started happening today. keep in mind i have a brand new motor in my car with all new parts..new catalytic converter ect..i just think i hooked up the hoses incorrectly whiched caused me to fail, and the erattic idiling ect. BTW this is from New Jersey state inspections yuk lol. i love you car but its really hard to get a clear view of the emissons hoses

what state of tune is the engine in? Is the motor mosly stock or is it modified? Is the SES light lit? The problem could be withgt eh emmisions hose routing considering that the co and hc's are hight. In addition to that, id also chck the following, jsut to be safe. Check the timing of the engine and the injectors. its not unheard of for those tpi injectors to leak and give poor spray because theyre dirty. If they leak, it would cause the engine to go rich and also possibly cause the erratic idle. Id also check to make sure the IAC is clean and in good working order and also make sure the ignition system is in good working order. ie, set to stock base time, new plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. Also make sure you have a new O2 sensor installed. If that is malfunctiuoning, then youll never pass emmisions because the computer will not be able to get the mixture right. Finally, check to make sure the MAF sensor and all the other stupid stuff like the CTS and IAT sensor are in good working order. Finnally, hook up winaldl or some other equivelent datalogging software to make sure the blms, o2 and all other readings are to spec. If the new cat is still good then you should, in theory, be able to pass emmisions.

its kinda modded..ported and polished headers, accel racing ignition..and thats just about it. i was thinking maybe my 02 sensor as well, but im not sure..also i wanted to ask..what happens when a car is overfilled with oil. would that cause all those symptoms including the SES light? cause all this started when i put an extra quart in because my pan gasket has a bad leak now and my dipstick doesnt read right for some reason.

adding an extra quart probably wouldnt make much of a difference if it wasnt overfilled to begin with. The SES light is probably the computer trying to tell you something is wrong. Youll need to retrive the codes from the ecm. This can be accomplished by shorting the two adjecent pins on the right top side of the aldl connector (pins A+B). A standard paper clip usually works well here. With the jumper inplace tunr the key to the on position (dont start the motor, though). The computer will then flash out the codes as a series of blinks. for example the code 12 for the engine not running is [blink .... blink blink] and then there will be a pause before the computer gives the next code. After all the codes have been given, the ecm will then cycle back throught he codes. Make sure you know which pins to jump. Dont want you to damage anything. I also beleive there is a tech artcle on this in the tech section here.
edit, what is the dipstick reading? The additionof the extra quart is probably unrelated to the problems your having.

i do have one more question and this is why im buying a digital camera soon...kinda hard to explain but...there are 2 small valves on my smog pump...one just above another one...one connects to a line..and the one on the top i think is a breather valve not conected to anything. it makes a loud tapping sound when i accelerate..when i put my finger over the valve the noise stops. could this be a faulty valve or somthing? i dont understand alot about emissions and how things work and my stupid hosing diagram on the car is faded so bad i cant see it.
The A.I.R. pump has a two position valve and a dump valve to vent air pump output to atmosphere through a small muffler. That is the "cheese-cutting" noise you are probably hearing on acceleration.
The valve looks like this:

Your VECI label should look like this:

Get your error codes. They probably are telling you exactly where to look for your problem(s).

When I worked at a garage, my boss told me that if you overfill the crankcase with oil, it will screw up your catalytic converter, I think it gets clogged or something. Just wanted to let you know, but I'm not sure how much oil it would take to do that.
And it appears that most of the other photos you have been given are from later engines, with the "backwards" component layout and single poly 'V' belt, and speed density. This is a little more like your engine compartment:

as i mentioned in another post i am pulling a code 44 now. and yes that cheese grating noise is the one im talking about. its pretty loud and silenced when i put my finger over it. i am trying to figure out with the problem is...o2 sensor?. see i dont think my catalatic converter is clogged from overfiling with oil becuase i passed the NOx with flying colors..i think its another problem and trying to diagnose it is so aggrivating.
Angel,
I saw that post. If you are getting a '44' but the sniffer says you are rich (high CO and HC readings) then I'd at least take a close look at the O² sensor. If you oil-coated it, it could be dead. Take a close look at the electrical connector for the sensor as well, just to make sure everything is clean and not corroded.

im going to check that tonight...i just got a new sensor so hopefull that improves things a bit and i will post an update. btw you are awesome with these cars and a great help to me thank you so much
