Why did this happen?
Why did this happen?
I was rolling along down the street...
Took a kinda sharp 90* turn, and punched it to about 80% throttle, car attempted to downshift into 2nd gear I believe.. but it stalled.. I floored it to see if it would kick down into 1st, but it died on me.. the "SES" light came on.. (I later checked for codes and didn't get any)..
My first thought was the transmission gave out.. but I fired the car right back up and everything was fine. I did a couple of WOT runs up and down my street to see if the same problem occured and everything was fine
I then thought about fuel starvation from the sharp turn I made prior to the fault.. but I have a '90 IROC-Z and read they had been equipped with baffels in the gas tank to prevent this kind of problem..
Any ideas on what could have caused this?

I think I know your problem. It happens to me. If you are low on gas, and you take a corner, and give it any kind of gas, the gas in your tank shifts, and you wont get any fuel to the ngine temporarily. That is probably why. And about the SES light. It is supposed to come on when the car is in the on positio (like yours was) and the engine is not running (also like yours was). Hope this helped.

My gas tank was at 3/4 AND as I mentioned above, I read somewhere that later model IROCs came equipped with baffels installed in the gas tanks to allow for acceleration under hard cornering.. if this is true, I don't see how fuel starvation could have occured..
To add further.. I had already straightened the car out when I punched it, I wasn't accelerating in the turn...
Thanks for your input tho

As for fuel starvation, i dont know if id rule it out unless you had recently filled the tank all the way up. the fuel level sensors in these cars are anything but accurate. Like I always say, if it doesnt do it again, dont sweat too much over it.

I suppose either it was infact fuel starvation or the 700R4 is on it's way out (least I'd finally be able to do my 5/6-spd swap).. and neither of those would have thrown a code to my knowledge..
Guess we'll see if it occurs again

i had this problem on my '92 Trans Am, and after i swapped the fuel filter it made a big difference. there might be heavy crud that shifts around on turns. also, is there a way to clean the sock on the fuel pump w/o opening everything up? (like a solvent or something) i wonder if that's part of the problem...

I have no clue when the fuel filter was last changed out on this car.. I'll look into that!
Thanks guys, I appreciate the quick replies

When the car died, the "SES" light came on, so I knew it wasn't a total power loss (ie battery connection), it had to have been mechanical..
I wish it had been the battery, at least then I'd know for sure what caused it and it would have been an easy fix

My 92 RS has a baffled tank, no matter how low the tank gets it won't starve going around a corner, I had a 89 RS and it would starve for fuel during even a mild turn once the gauge got to about 1/3 tank, even going slow, guess it wasn't all bad, it always let me know when to buy gas
