anyone install a Tommy Johnson Mini STarter?

Hey everyone

I did a search on this already and couldn't find anything. I have an 88 iroc with the L98 350. I removed the old starter already and have the mini starter ready to be put it. Is there anything I need ot know when putting this one in? Or can I just bolt it up with no problems? ANy help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I've done mine. The only thing you're going to have to watch for is getting the correct spacing between the pinion gear and the flywheel.
I don't remember the spec (should be in the instructions). I used a drill bit.

big weight difference huh

hey thanks for the reply...

there is a huge weight difference and much easier to get past the exhaust. They say the spacing has to be 1mm, how do I check that? Thats the one real problem I have, other then that it should pop right in.

I used a drill bit 1mm thick (if that's your spec) placed between the pinion gear (extended) and the flywheel. Just pull the pinion out and see if the bit fits. Too loose or Too tight = adjust again.
Getting the spacing right was what took most of my time.

thanks for the quick reply...

I got what you are saying about putting the drill bit in there, but I am still not quiet sure on how to see this? Sorry if it sounds stupid. do I put the bit in the pinion gear and then place the whole unit up there?

sorry to be a pain

Mount your starter
Pull the pinion gear out by hand till it meshes with the flywheel
while holding the pinion gear there see if the drill bit fits between the pinion and flywheel.
Adjust your starter as necessary

one last question I hope, do I have to remove the black piece infront of the starter that protects the flywheel?

I am so confused

it'll make it easier to check your spacing if you do. it's only held up with 4 bolts.
