What's the thing infront of my heater valve...

This black box with some hoses between my heater valve and my alternator. I've got an '87 IROC..

My '85 IROC idn't have a heater valve, or this black box, or engine cooler lines. And in not having such, was 1000 times easier to work on.

So do I need this black box?

At a guess it's part of the AIR system (Does the black box have one hose down to the Cat, and one going into the smog tubes/headers?).

Plenty of people run without it, and the HCV. Your issue is around wether you need the AIR for emmisions testing.

I do need A.I.R. for emssiions... it's just weird how it's routed and like I said... my '85 didn't have that black box.

Yes it does. That black thing connecting to my smog pump! I'd like it gone, if I can by-pass it. but it has some electrical connectors that my 85 didn't have... so I don't want my ECM to go ape sh--.

I'm just trying to clean things up a bit... one by using the A/C delete, and anything else I can to make my 350 swap in the next few weeks easier.

Twilight,

If you need A.I.R., you need to keep the pump and that valve.

Just out of curiousity how did my '85 run with the smog pump and air but without the box?

In 85 GM used a vacuum controlled AIR pump diverter valve instead of the electrically controlled one you have.
