Can I use different bell-housing bolt holes?

If I recall correctly, there are a total of 8 bell-housing bolt holes that can be used to mount the transmission on a SBC engine with a 700-R4 transmission, and (at least on my car) only 6 of them were used. In my case, that meant the top two holes, the two holes below those, and then the very bottom two holes.

I'm wondering if, however, instead of using the two holes below the top two, I could use the two holes above the bottom two. The only thing that I can see that would be different is the bolt-length for those holes (the bolts that I'm using are bottoming-out). The ones above those are nearly impossible for me to see, let alone put bolts in and torque. I can't even remember how I got them out in the first place.

I don't see why there would be any problem with this--I just want to make sure that I'm okay to do this.

Then again... I might be mistaken about the extra bolt holes.

Thanks

BTW -- Do I need to use thread locker on the transmission bolts?

You won't need thread locker.

I think the other two holes have a locating dowel in them, so you won't be able to use'em.
