Whats A PCV valve for/ SMOG ??'s

I have my 86 TPI torn apart right now and I bought some specture chrome valve covers but they dont have a hole for the PCV valve to go into. So what does a PCV valve do and how vital is it to the motor..Can it be removed? What needs to be changed if it is removed. Also on the other side valve cover there is another vaccume hose..where does that one go again..and what is its Fuction? Lastly I'm gettin rid of all that smog pump stuff and there 2 metal tubes that run along the passenger side exh. manifold. I know one goes to the cat but where does the other one go to? Thanks for readin this.. I'm looking to get the car running very quick but keep runnin into dumb road blocks like these.

The purpose of PCV is to draw vapors out of the crankcase. THe tube going into the opposite valve cover carries in clean air. It's not necessary, as such, but it's healthy to have it; it keps the opil much cleaner, and keeps the engine from sludging up from having combustion gases in it all the time.

Those two hard lines running along the passenger side header should be from the AIR pump. One goes to the cat, like you thought, and the other one runs around the back of the block to the AIR tubes on the drivers side exhaust manifold.

OK...By sludging do u mean oil gettin thick w/ crap...or somethin else? Would a reg. oil change prevent that? Say have it changed every 1500 mi. ?? I change my oil every 2000..

Also where does the passenger side valve cover tube route to?

Ok yea thats exactlly what I thought it did.. Now I'm not goin to be hurtin my EGR w/ removing this am I? Cause I have heard that it affects it but then I also heard that it doesnt hurt it all. Right now I removed it cause it was rusty and fallin apart. I wanted to leave it off and just block of the hole but I heard that I would have problems w/ detonation. So I think I'm just goin to get a new one and run it.

thanks guys keep the info comin!!

Without the proper crankcase ventilation the sludge will build up very quickly and very frequent oil changes won't help the situation and they'll cost you money. The sludge looks like black chocolate pudding, for lack of a better explanation. By the way, you can just get rid of your AIR tubes and EGR and still pass emissions if you don't feel like hooking it all up.

Keep the PCV. It'll save you headaches in the future. The passenger side tube runs from the valve cover to the throttle body.

Get rid of the cheap chrome valve covers, having your engine "look" shiny isn't worth the internal damage that they do. Clean up your stock ones and re-use them.

Well I dont have emissions here. Thats why I ripped all the smog stuff off...but I'm stickin w/ the valve covers. Umm I'll just order a new valve cover from them that has the hole for PCV.
