whats the best oilpan gasket

I have to replace my oil pan gasket tomorrow and need to know which gasket works best? Are they all 1 piece? Do I use any RTV at all? I am doing this with the engine in the car.

Not sure what make it would be in the US, but I like to use the neoprein (spelling?) ones.. kinda like a rubber. seals awesome. I have not changed mine yet, but I do beleive all one peice . (correct me if I'm wrong). looking at it.. looks like a real PITA to replace with the engine in.

I don't know what the number was, but mine was a felpro one peice, not all oil pan gaskets are one peice, alot are 4 peices and they're a royal PITA. Mine was blue rubber kinda stuff and it was by far the easiest oil pan gasket i've ever used. It came with it's own bolts because the gasket is alot thicker than standard, and the only place it recommended putting rtv was in the corners on the front and back (by the rear and front main caps) it sealed up really well and i haven't had any leaks at all. I'd highly recommend something like that.

And changing the gasket in the car....thats a bitch as it is, i couldn't imagine using a 4 peice gasket, your going to have to unbolt your manifolds and engine mounts and jack the engine up with a cherry picker if your going to get away with doing it "in the car". There has to be enough clearance for the front of the pan to clear the main caps and rods...

I have used the Fel Pro one piece on several engines since they started using them. Very nice gasket. Also not to bad to change in the car.

Did you use any RTV on it all to hold it in place? Im hoping that once the pan is out that oil dont keep dripping down the inside of the block on the lip as I keep wiping it dry.

Are you guys SERIOUS?!? I've nevr changed an oil pan gasket on my GTA. IT has the 350. I didn't know you had to loosen up the exhaust and all that stuff. Any other car I've had, you could just get under it and take the oil pan off. Anyways, I've used those blue felpro gaskets on th valve covers. They're great! Also, I don't know how these pans are, or the gaskets, but on any other oil pan gasket I've ever done, it can be a real PITA to get the gasket to line up. Usually, you can lay the gasket on the pan, and push the bolts up through the pan and the gaskets will hold them in place. It holds the gasket where it needs to be and you just start each bolt. Then tighten them up! Matt

I used that Fel pro gasket when I assembled the engine on a stand. I used some RTV in the front and rear corners. I don't think you have to with this gasket but I figured it wouldn't hurt. I think you will have your work cut out for you if you are going to change the oil pan gasket in the car. Good Luck.

The 4 piece cork gasket that came with my engine rebuild kit was great. It kept a nice even coating of oil on the outside of my entire undercarrage to protect it.

Live an learn. At 10k miles I replaced it with the 1 piece fel pro and so far I'm happy. Oil's still coming from somewhere, but I don't think it's my oil pan.

Well I got the 1 piece Fel Pro gasket today and got as far as jacking the car up on jackstands befire I decided to cal it quits before I even started. Its 20 degrees out and there is no way I amdoing this by myself if I am not in any mood to do it. Ill just keep adding oil for a few nore weeks.

Hey Bottled,

Can you completly remove your oil pan? I don't have the stock pan anymore, I use a Canton and I can not remove it without lifting the motor. I am just curious.

I am very happy with the blue fel pro gasket. I liked the metal rings around the bolt holes in the gasket. Also it came with plastic pins for the four corners that lined the pan and gasket up and the pan kind of snapped over them. If i remember correctly this should hold the pan and gasket up so you can get some of the other bolts started. Good luck
