Could be that "Crappy rigged up Y-pipe". If the pipe is leaking than a popping noise will result. Check for exhaust leaks.

Popping in the exhaust (afterfire) or the intake (backfire)?
Possibilities are:
- Broken valve spring;
- Incorrect valve/cam timing;
- Sticking, bent, or damaged valve;
- Excess carbon in a chamber;
- Excessively lean mixture;
- Vacuum leaks;
- Exhaust leaks;
- Ignition crossfire from bad cap or wires;
- Worn distributor;
- Weak ignition coil;
- Failing spark plug;
- Leaking EGR valve;
- Plug gaps too wide;
- Dirty carburetor passages;
- Water in fuel;
- Fuel filter clogged/pump failure.
That should give you a weekend's worth of things to do...
Hi Vader,
I am currently trying to tune a supercharger on my 1991 TPI TA.
I am getting popping from the exhaust.
I asked my prom programmer to make a leaner program as I thought this problem was from unburned fuel.
Is this right?
By the way I am also getting 11:1 to 12:1 wide band A/F ratios.
Thanks.
