Coil Questions. Please Help!!

Hey guys. I have got a few questions I would like to see answered. I bought a new coil for my GTA and it didn't come with the cover that fits over the coil and mounts it to the bracket. The ocoil that was on the car didn't have one on it either and was mounted in the wrong place. I went to the dearership to try and order one and they said that it was a discontinued part. Called the junkyards and found nothing. So, couple questions:
1. I may have to figure a way to mount it myself. Does the coil have to be grounded?
2. Would any of the coil covers fron other coils (single connector style or other) adapt to my dual connector style? (something I may be able to get from the dealership)
3. Does the maganent around the coil have to be enclosed or protected?

I appreciate any help you can give guys! Thanks Damien. Drive on..............

The metal "ring" around the coil should be grounded. That's part of the function of the original bracket.

Don't know if the original cover would interchange. Honestly, I don't remember there being a coil cover around it, but maybe I wasn't looking closely or my memory is getting fuzzy.

The coil is totally weatherproof and self contained- it's a tough little bugger. No need to protect it in any serious way. Heat is the coil's enemy so don't mount it over an exhaust manifold or anything like that.

Yes, the coil MUST be grounded by the metal ring on the outside. The only way you're going to find one of those brackets is to go to the junkyard. You'll have to buy the whole coil since the bracket is riveted on to the stock coil. IT's a two piece bracket as well. You have to grind the old rivets off, and use nuts and bolts to put the new coil on to the old bracket. Or, if you're handy with working with metal, make your own. Wouldn't be too awful hard. You'd need to see what the old one looks like. The coil bracket mounts on another bracket thatis mounted on the two aft intake bolts on the passenger side. The EGR solenoid also mounts on this bracket. Make sure you have this bracket before you go looking for a coil bracket. Best bet is the junkyard. Matt

Thanks Matt. Any ideas where I could find a picture of what the bracket looks like. I have the bracket that the EGR solenoid mounts to. Thanks again. Drive on.......................Damien
