great ,thanks a lot guys..and F-bird I already have all the things i need for the speed adjuster and light plug (great Idea). I will get everything apart and set up this weekend.
Would it be cheaper to buy the stones individually , or buy a kit?

I use air operated die grinders, but that unit should work well. The air grinders are smaller, lighter, and more maneuverable, but the collet size is really what's important so the nose of the grinder can be stuck into ports as much as possible.

I'm currently playing with some old '993 smogger heads. Laugh if you want, but I've gained 18cc on the intake ports so far, opened the valve bowls, and have an almost direct line-of-sight from the port to the entire exhaust valve. There has been a lot of grinding on these heads. I found long ago that the carbide burrs work much better for the heavier material removal, while the stones are better left for trimming and finishing. The burrs are very good on aluminum, since they don't glog easily.

You can purchase a kit if you desire, but will probably find that you will have a few "favorite" mounted wheels that you will be seeking individually to supplement you kit. Check with you local industrial suppliers for mounted wheels. Most kits have medium quality wheelswhile industrial dir grinder mounted wheels will offer different spindle sizes, different abrasive materials, and different grits. The finer ceramic resin wheels are excellent for polishing.

As for th espeed control, you can purchase a router speed control for about $10 that will be up to the task.

Personally, I wouldn't bother with stones at all. Go back to my thread on this and get the carbide cutters I posted pics of. They don't cost much and will do the job a LOT better--not to mention lasting a LOT longer than any stone.

Definitely get cutters, if you're porting iron heads, stones will take waaaay to long. That grinder will work, though it's definitely not a pro's piece . What I do with iron heads is to use an air tool with a carbide bit when I'm going to be removing a lot of material, and come back with the electric for finer work. For aluminum I never use an air grinder, they just cut to da** fast.

I ordered my burs from carbidebur.com. There are about 3 or 4 that I mainly use. They are: cyndrilical radius end, oval, tree radius, and flame shaped. My favorites are the cyndrilical and the tree radius. They are must have when porting heads. I'm getting ready to port my Vortecs I just got, then do some experimentation with a junk set of 193 heads I have laying around.

thanks for the link...good stuff. Well I pulled the old heads off today...(one anyway) I ended up buying a Craftsman Die Grinder...got a good deal on one, couldnt pass it up
I missed out on the cutter set..Damn ebay snipers!! So More links to suppliers would be good..thanks guys

Basicly I do the whole job with just three cutters.
A few stones, and a rat tail file in a drill.
Then I polish the exhaust ports and chambers with some rolls.

Need one long 6" shaft cutter. Get the double cut style for cast iron.

If you don't already have one, this two-speed Roto-Zip unit works fairly well for porting work, as long as you get the optional ¼" collet for it:

Now thats an original suggestion...guess what , I have a rotozip!! But I already bought a Craftsman..2.5 amp 27,000 rpm I gought a pretty good deal on it they sell for $90 new I got mine for $50 from a guy at Harbor freight..a salesman...I bought a pulley puller kit on sale for $5. I asked about die grinders. He said all they had was the dremmel type, but maybe he could help me out...bet the manager would love to here that one...with a little blackmale , I may have gotten it cheaper! anyway , I guess i have a B/u now.
As soon as I find a local supplier I will buy the cutters you guys suggested. Thanks again for all your help...I'll BE BACK!!!!

I used a carbide burr to remove casting flash from oil returns and coolant passages. Didn't really like it for the porting work, though.

The larger stone in the SA Deluxe Porting Kit had the right diameter to achieve the proper radii in the ports (tight areas around the guides is one exception to the stone preference). If I had a larger burr, that may have been different, but I preferred the finish left by the stone as well - took less roll work to get to the final finish.

But, that's just me.

I used an air die grinder, because that's what I have. Wore leather gloves, so temp wasn't an issue. I'd think high heat would be more of a problem with an electric than too cool would be with an air.

Aren't those diamond tip things for wood?
