won't even crank
won't even crank
Hey everyone,
My car had been sitting in storage for about 6.5 months untill yesterday when i pulled it out. When I picked it up it started right up, no problems at all. I let it run for a while and put some new gas in it and checked the oil etc... a few hours later i went back to start it again and it did not even attempt to crank, the battery is full, i don't have any blown fuses or anything. at the time i didn't have the time to look at it too deeply so i left and came back about 5 hours later - it started right up, no problems. Then after i drove it for about 20 minutes i came back home, turned it off and tried to start it again, nothing. I thought that maybee i had that heat-soaking problem so i left it overnight and came back to it this morning but it wouldn't start once again.
Anyone got any idea what this could be? I am stumped.
thanks!
Ben

If your starter solenoid connections are allright, check the starter relay, if that's ok, drop the starter and go get it tested. Your car have VATS? Mine disables the starter on it if it goes bad... (that and the fuel injectors) , so make sure your "security" light isn't on when the engine won't crank... if it is, you have a VATS problem.
i went ahead and tried to take a look at the connections on the solenoid, while i was doing this i think i found what the problem is. I found a black wire that has a strange connection the hooked into the starter but i am not sure where. The wire has a sort of "clamp" end on it that went to some part on the starter but i can't figure out exactly where. Does anyone know where this goes?

that almost sounds like you are describing an inline fusible link... the wire's broken? see if the other end is connected to the solenoid (not the big battery cable, but the other smaller post), maybe a broken off connector, or you could have a bad link there.
yeah i don't know exactly what this one is called but it is definatly in bad shape, it's not the big one no... it looks like it would connect to the post like you were talking about but i am not sure which one. Would the post be on the solenoid or on the starter itself? i could only find one post that looked like it had been covered and protected from the elements so i tried it on that one and for a split second the starter cranked but then died off again. I am pretty sure now that i have it isolated but the cable obviously needs to be replaced and i have no idea if i can buy one of these. it comes right out of the wiring harness down to the starter.

Ok the starter cranked as soon as you made contact with that post? or you connected it and turned the key and then it cranked? The only post it should go on is the one that has 2 or 3 wires there already. (small post, on the solenoid, not the starter). You may just have to do the cut and splice thing to run a new wire to that location.
