engine heating up abnormally quick

i just got my 305 LG4 running after sitting for one year

the motor seems to heat up abnormally quick

i am not driving the car yet, i am just letting it sit in my driveway while i tune it

some clues i have to play with are: just installed long tube headers..........did not put on my exhaust yet, so i am running with open headers, i know the headers are supposed to heat up quickly, but not the entire engine

bad gas, i know, i know, i need to go and put some fresh gas in that isnt stale from sitting for a year

i set my edelbrock 600 CFM carb to idle at 800 RPM
could this be too high? i also have the idle mixture screws turned out 1.5 turns

i do not have my fan wired up yet, but i am not sure if this has anything to do with the problem, because as i said, the motor heats up very quickly

thanx

i did a search and i think i found the culprit, i need to switch my vacuum advance from manifold vacuum to ported vacuum and re-time my engine

pretty quick

engine gets pretty hot to the touch after a short period of minutes with out much load being placed upon it

i am thinking that is the problem though

ok, i bumped down the idle to about 550 RPM and switched over my vacuum advance to ported vacuum seems to run much better now

if i run 93 octane (which i think i need to anyway) how much base timing should i be able to run?

yeah, because i was taking the vacuum for my advance from the manifold rather than the carb

i switched it over this morning and she runs better

i also knocked the idle down a little bit to like 550/600 RPM

Sothing around 650/700 in N 550 in D.

The open headders especially long tubes in general create more heat in the engine compartment and do make the engine warm up quicker but nothing too noticleable. Unplug the vacuum advance completely when you time your engine. When you bump the timing up and idle increases it can suck through a ported source even though its not supposed to.
