Do aftermarket waterpumps imrove cooling?
Stock waterpump lasts 100+ miles.Besides the weight savings, are there any other advantages switching to an aftermarket AL pump?If so whats is the watermpump of choice?

Personally, I like to stick to the cast iron ones, I like the Brassworks Flowcooler pumps myself. But this is a mostly personal preference. I would rather keep the heat in the cooling system rather than radiate it out and allow more heat from the combustion process to seep out.

I had a stock replacement POS waterpump in my 87Z since I put the new engine in. (new radiator, new everything, 160 degree stat, etc). It still ran hot even w/ both fans on all the time. Even on a cool night it was up at 200-220. Bad traffic in the heat was a big problem, it would get way too far up the temp guage way too quick.
I just installed a new cam over yesterday and today, and also threw in a Stewart Stage 1 pump and hi-flow 160 degree stat that they also sell. On my limited cruise tonight the car never got a touch above an indicated 160. I also broke the cam in for 30 minutes at 2000 rpm in my garage, and the temp never got above 175 or so approx. That is WAYYYYY better than before, I woulda been overheating big time after 30 minutes of running that high w/ no movement to get some airflow.
I am 100% happy w/ the Stewart Stage 1 pump so far. More testing is due, but the way it performed during the 30 minute cam breakin was enough to ease my mind that the extra cost was worth it.
The Stage 1 pump is iron though, runs $69 in standard finish, extra for gettting fancy on the finish. I think there is an aluminum version if you want to spend more money, but I'm not sure.

I just ordered the Stage 1 with the "fancy" finish to match my "fancy" new engine. Also got the bolt kit and 180* thermostat. The total cost with shipping was less than the cost of just the Edelbrock pump itself.
I feel good! Thanks Ray!

I couldn't remember what the upgraded finish was, powder coated, or chrome, or whatever and didn't want to look it up so "fancy" was all I could come up with. LOL.
