Axle bearings- technical name?

I'm not quite sure of what to call these bearings... the ones I'm after are at the ends of the axle housing. I went to some of the online parts places (carparts.com, expressautoparts.com, wrenchhead.com), and noticed many bearings. Under the rear axle, they listed pinion bearings. Under "rear wheel bearings", they had "wheel bearings", "inner wheel bearings", and "outer wheel bearings."

What am I looking for? Are these really called wheel bearings? And are they really this much? I think I paid $8 for a set ($4/inner & $4/outer) of FRONT wheel bearings, and $2 for a seal. The prices are 4x as much for the rear axle??

Theres no inner+outer in the back, just one bearing... rear wheel bearing.
Yea, they are more expensive. Dont get a cheap one, or you will just be replacing it again.

I'm going through this same thing right now, but I need ALL of them. If you're talking about the ones that go "outboard" (nearest the tire) then I think those are "outer wheel bearings." If you're talking about the ones that are inside the pumpkin on either side of the ring gear, I believe those are the inners. Unfortunately, they seem to be ***** expensive. The pinion gear bearing sits around the shaft of the pinion gear where it exits the pumpkin towards the driveshaft. This is all AFAIK,

S.

Hey MadMax, are you sure? When I went to both AutoZone and WrenchHead.com they listed both inner and outers. Are they the same bearing just used in two different locations? Or are they truly two different bearings?

Positive. Used to sell the stuff, let alone replaced my fair share of them.

The pinion bearings(2) are... pinion bearings.
The carrier bearings(2) are... carrier bearings.

Theres no other bearings back there.

Quoting myself here:"just one bearing... rear wheel bearing."

Just to clarify, there is one on the left side of the car, and one on the right.

If it'a a 10-bolt, the part # is 5707 in Timken or R1563TAV in BCA. Should be about $10 each, one per side as madmax described.

Useful place to look up stuff like that.

If your axles are torn-up or worn much at all, get repair bearings for it. Otherwise your new regular bearings won't last long. (Repair bearing allow the bearings to ride on an undamaged, fresh axle surface) They also have an integrated seal.
