Which 1st, SLP Headers or Cat-Back?
I've wanted SLP headers for a while and now that they are $350 it seems like a good time. My question is should I get the headers first or a cat back system. I've got a 91 1LE (L98) with the stock setup. I don't have the cash now for both, so what should I get first?

I'd get the headers now since they're more expensive and on sale. Cat-backs are pretty inexpensive.

Hey, I would actually suggest getting the cat back first believe it or not. I put headers on my camaro before I redid the rest of the exhaust and It kept blowing donut gaskets out of the collectors due to the increase in backpressure in the system. The average life of one was about two or three days. I replaced the rest of the exhaust, and I haven't replaced a collector gasket since, and it's been about a year now. So I would definitely suggest doing the exhaust first.

I should have said to just get the headers now since they're on sale. You dont have to install them right away. Get the cat-back later and put them on at the same time. It'll be more expensive all at once to put them both on, but it'll be cheaper than paying twice.

Consider the true cost of the headers(this is from my own SLP invoice):
HEADER 1-3/4 4to1 82 CAM/FB 1CAT W/AIR.... 349.95
INSTALL KIT, HEADER 88-92 CAM/FB 1CAT....... 68.00
ADAPTER, 3" SLIP CATALYST, BOXED............. 29.95
....................................................
'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''447.90
Then consider most other headers, include all of the above for less money. And they are probably better constructed than the POS headers SLP sent me.
But I'd agree with getting the catback first. Putting headers in front of the stock catback will definitely increase backpressure, which ALWAYS hurts power. A good-quality catback will net you 15 hp, but the headers will only get you 10.
One final reason for going with the catback first. Unless you're a silly-assed fool(like me ), and insist on a Borla catback, the catback will probably be cheaper than the headers.

Just FYI... I am in the middle of putting SLP's on my car and WTF??? I'm having one hell of a time getting them in. Luckily my car is in 100 pieces at the moment. You might have an easier time because yours is a 1LE - less crap under the hood. But I'd get SLP's over anyone else. They's last a lot longer in my oppinion.

I just finished installing the SLP 1 3/4" headers on my 89 IROC L98. It was no picnic! A heads up for you is to put new motor mounts in first. You are going to need all the clearance you can find with the 1 3/4" setup! It ended up being a 8-10 hour job!! ! I second doing the Cat back first.

Not to be-labor the point, but consider the "true cost" of the SLP headers before they ran the special. $479.95 + $68 + $29.95 = $577.90!!! And, considering that most other headers run from $310 to $370 and are NOT 409SS, I'd say the SLPs are a true steal. In fact, just placed my order!!!
