computer problem HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok here's the deal. I brought my car to the mechanic's today cause he detected a misfire....he scanned the computer for codes and something came up i don't remember the code but the MAF isn't getting enough voltage. My TPS readings were in the 60's! i don't know what it means but i know its bad! I've had this fastchip for a while now but my mechanic thinks thats the cause or my ECM is fried....he thinks maybe the chip cuts the voltage to make it run rich(which the computer said) so what do u guys think??????? HELP!

fly,

If you're getting a MAF error code, you should start looking there first. I'm thinking that the mechanic already knows this, and since you've enlisted his help, you probably don't want to undermine his plan of attack. If you've decided to repair it yourself, that's a different situation.

If you are going to repair it yourself, you'll need to scan for error codes. I understand that this has already been done, but you'll need to learn to do it anyway since you'll have to do it later to confirm the repair.

Follow the instructions listed in the Tech Articles on this site.

Later,
Vader

vader.....he's taking care of it...i don't remember the code but it said the MAF isn't getting proper voltage..it didn't say the MAF is bad...just little voltage...i'll try to find out if there is a specific code for that on monday..i'm not touching it....i e-mail ed wright to see if the chip cuts the voltage to the MAF but i doubt thats the case...would it be a bad ECM then?

I was getting that code on my 86TA. I replaced the MAF power relay and the problem went away.

There are many components in the mass air flow system. If the mass air flow sensor is not receiving the correct voltage, it could be corroded wiring, bad relays, poor connections, bad grounds. I would check all of theses items before I replaced the ECM. When I bought my car it had a bad MAS relay. The relay was corroded and it did not allow enough power through to operate the MAS. I found the bad relay by doing voltage drop tests on all of the connections. Once I replaced the relay everything worked correctly.

The power and burnoff relays are around 10 to 11 dollars each at the dealer. First step I would take is getting that TPS voltage down to around where it's supposed to be, .54vdc. .60 is ok, it's within tolerance, just that you want to set everything as close to spec as possible when you are troublshooting the MAF system.
