Just curious if any other vehicals had this. Are all the l-98 heads aluminum?
What about the TBI heads, were any of them aluminum?
I'm looking for aluminum heads to put on my 400 sbc.

No third gens had aluminum heads only corvettes did. You might want to consider a better head than a stock L98 head because they are not the best breathing out there. However you can see 12s with them if they are ported and polished. Your much better off with vortec heads and the price is a bargin at 250$ each. I got into aluminum heads on my L98 and I somewhat regret it because it ran much hotter I had to buy a 185degree thermostat and a 185degree fan switch which is fine but its hard on the battery. And it still gets a little warmer than I would like on hot days. As for Monte's there was never any tpis made for Monte's because of the price of manufacturing it into a car they knew would be gone by 87'. The only injected motor in a Monte was tbi 305 in the LS models (granny-car).

also the 58cc chambers on a 400 will net some serious compression. 64cc with flattops pistons is 11:1 as it is in a 400.

the montes had the LG4 i beleive
not quite to the expectations the "SS" nameplate holds
aluminum L98 heads will be more then enouigh to get into the 12's...probly a low 12 if the heads are worked properly

11:1 compression is what I'm looking for.
I keep hearing back and forth that vortecs are aluminum. Some say they are some say they aren't
Besides vortecs need too many specialty parts to make it worth while.
I wanna get aluminum heads so hopefully I could run a bit higher compression (better heat disipation) and I want something with nice small well shaped chambers.

vortecs are iron. you can get them with upgraded springs and screwed in studs for like 700/pair but you have to use a special intake with them because the port and bolt location is different from an old school sbc, and the choice of intakes is limited. the aluminum L98 heads are decent for stock heads and have some potential if ported, which is what i plan to do with mine when i rebuild my engine in a month or so.

you can get them aluminum or cast, altho for the price of aluminum heads you might as well get some AFR's...

The Monte SS was also available with the L69, even after it was discontinued in these cars. But that doesan't matter as far as the heads, because in any given year the LG4 and L69 heads were the same; 86 back got 416, 87 up got 081.
The only cars that had the L98 were Vettes and these cars. Vettes had 58cc aluminum heads, F cars had 64cc cast-iron heads.
I doubt you're going to be able to use 58cc heads on a 400, the CR will be much too high for pump gas.
TBI heads are garbage, all of them. If a motor came with a TBI on top of it, you don't want the heads, period.
Your best bet is to go with aftermarket heads.

The 1985 L98 Corvette had cast-iron heads. As did part of the 1986 run.
IIRC the '86 convertibles got the aluminum heads about halfway through the model year (when the convertibles were introduced) while the coupes kept the iron heads. Or, it could be the other way around.
Also, IIRC, every 'Vette in 1987 (and from there on) had aluminum heads.

Yea, only Corvettes '85 to '92 I beleive had the L98 engines, as well as the '87-92 F bodies. Corvettes had aluminum heads, F-bodies got iron, but other than that, they were basically the same heads.

Y'all re-read my post again. I was referring to Corvettes throughout.
And once again, the early Corvette L98s used CAST-IRON heads. All 1985 model Corvettes and into the 1986 model year Corvettes.
I just get confused on which got the aluminum versions first---the '86 Corvette coupe or '86 Corvette convertible.
In 1987, both versions of the Corvette got the aluminum heads. AND the aluminum headed Corvette L98 continued through the 1991 Corvette model year.
The LT1 version of the Corvette started in 1992.
