RANDOM needs fixed bad

Lately i have been having a problem with my car not starting.... today i tracked it down and found that the fuel pump was not turning on( no fuel at the rails).... so i jumpered a wire from the battery to the power wire on the fuel pump(in the backseat). well it still would not start. about 1 hour later i went back and the car started fine... it has been doing this for about 2 weeks now.... at random times... sometimes with the engine cool, sometimes hot, sometime medium.... just random...

could the fuel pump just be going out, could it be loose wires?( if so, i would think the car would shut off while i was driving sometime, which it has never done) sometimes it just won't start... it turns over fine, and i am getting spark... it is fuel pump related some how.... but my fuel pump is only about 10 months old

you might want to check the knock sensor, it is in play with the fuel pump,if the engine starts knocking it sends a signal to the pump and kills it to keep from engine damage. well in lamins terms

it has never died while it was running, just sometimes it will not start.... do you think it could still be the knock sensor?

Well when it doesn't want to start, bang on the tank a bit to try to coax the pump into running. That worked like a charm when my truck's fuel pump started to choke.

Uhhhh...no.

Please refrain from from posting your assumptions on how things work, you could send those who have less knowledge than yourself, on a wild goose chase.

Your sure the problem is fuel pump related?

Turn the key on, do you hear "whine" of the fuel pump running?

If yes, then no need to diag the fuelk, pump, your problem lies elsewhere.

When you "direct power" the pump, does the pump "whine" and turn on? if so, your problem isn't with the pump, per say...could still be a pressure problem with the pump, but you'll need a gauge to be sure.

I have replaced the fuel filter, and there is no "whine" as you wanna call it...

I know it is not turning on.... but i am not sure why, cause tongiht i started it up and drove it around for about 2 hours.... then it suddenly died.... I called the wrecker... got it towed home and it started right up and drove it off the truck.

I have also tried banging on the tank... lol.... no help, but it made me feel better

LOL, the actual jaring that the car is taking under tow got the pump to start. I use a really large rubber mallot when I suspect a bad fuel pump. A couple a good hard raps while someone cyxles the key will usually make it start. If your jumping the correct wire a little before the tank then it's got to be either a bad pump, broken wire or bad connection or a loose ground. There should be a connector at the back of the tank under the car that will put you closer to the pump for testing. If no fuel but 12 volts and the ground is good, needs a pump.

You have to jump the relay from the underside, at the back seat..the tank side of the relay..does that make scence. If you are tyring to jump it from the interior side of the relay, the relay may still stop the power from reaching the pump.....Sounds to me like you need a new fuel pump....just a matter of time before it stops all together...

Exactly. When my truck wouldn't fire I got my father to sit there cranking it while I looked at the injectors (TBI). No fuel. So, with him still cranking I gave the centre of the tank a light tap with my foot and it fired up almost instantly. It had to be right in the middle of the tank though, directly under the pump.
