A/C delete: Do you need the pulley?

I looked around and didn't find any real reason... do you really need to get the pulley if the are pulling out the A/C? Will something bad happen if you don't get the pulley?
Thanks,
Douglas

I know on my motor I needed the AC pully even though I removed all of it's componets, the auto tentioner wont work w/o it. I think it was in a either tech article or a post on this site that said just leaving the pully there, for the sake of your auto tentioner will not rob you of any power. And remember, it's our duty to ensure all ford owners are well aquaited with the rear end of our car.

I think I mistated what I was asking. As far as for the engine to work right I know you need something there, I was asking if I could just leave the compressor hooked to nothing instead of having to buy the delete pulley.
My fault.

i just removed my AC today and as far as i know it is a good idea to keep the pulley there and hook it up. hope this helps some? if u have any problems just let us know.

you can use the compressor with everything else off from the a/c.

i used the delete pulley to look like a factory job.

Cool. Any idea why it would make a loud grinding noise?

I've seen a few fbod owners that got rid of there AC and have a belt just around the tensioner (no ac or smog). Dont remember any exact routing or part#s.

A loud grinding noise is most likely from the bearings on one of your pulleys.

i got rid of the tensioner, smog pump, and ac. just have to buy a belt thats close to the right size, and then swing the alternator to tighten it up. we had to make a custom adjustable bracket for the alternator though. they probably make something you can buy. you can see the front piece of it in this pic:

how did you manage to route the belt so it still works properly without something where the tensioner was????? there was someone that found a 6 rib idler pulley that was the same size as the tensioner on the boards but i cant seem to find it now

Above, is a thread in the TPI section about another way of doing it (no A/C delete pulley needed). Just swapped the pulley on the tensioner for one with ribs (so it can ride on the inside of the belt instead of on the outside) and looped it around the pulley completely bypassing both the A/C and the smog pump.

I though it was pretty inventive, farily clean looking and definitely cheap to do. Owner reports no issues with the setup.

yea in fact thats exactly what im doing just need the new tensioner pulley because right now the belt grooves are on the flat of the pulley.

i want to run it like afathippo....
hey afathippo............have you had any problems with belt slippage or anything like that????

and do you konw what sizebelt you needed, i didnt think they made a serp belt that short.

if you leave the AC compressor there, with no lines on it, it doesnt have any oil in it.

the refrigerant also contains the lubricating oil.. without it, the compressor will seize. furthermore, you would have to have the input connected to the output so that the compressor doesnt suck in dirty air.... otherwise, it will start to clog that way too.

transam12sec.....that is the exact way im running my belt now. i cut off all the other part of the tensioner acc bracket and am running it exactly as you have drawn. that way it wont hit the upper rad hose. but i have to either get a longer belt or put my smaller underdrive crank pulley on there to see if the belt i have now will be long enough.

but i want to get rid of the pass side bracket and tensioner altogether......will the first belt routing give me enough contact area on the waterpump??? (just like afathippo ran his)

I never finished my conversion on the bird. I am however doing it to my truck with the caprice brackets. Why cant you just gut the smog pump and order a belt from a car with no air?

well for a while i had the smog pump gutted and you can do that but it will sieze up over time and i (like most people) wanted to clean up the engine bay and get rid of "clutter". thats the main reason i got rid of a/c too
