Best cam for LT1? LT4 upgrade?
I may be counting my proverbial chickens before they hatch, but I plan on purchasing an LT1 soon, and was wondering if anyone could recommend a cam (the LT1 is out of a 96 Trans Am, if that makes a difference). Also,
what's with the LT4 upgrade and how much $$?
Thanks

First, the LT4 upgrade is a total waste of moeny. Don't get me wrong, it's a neat kit but not worth nearly as much as people get for it. Think of it this way - do you want to spend 2000 and up for a 'decent' kit with FACTORY gm parts or would you prefer to have a car as wild as you want it and use some of the best aftermarket parts? Even a half-assed port job on an LT1 head will outflow the stock LT4 heads that come with the kit.
I guess it all depends on how you want your car to be when you're done. If you go out and buy a set of Stage 2 assembled heads from T Byrne, have your intake port-matched and then get...let's say a Comp 306 cam (230/244 .510/.540 112) you'll have your car running traction-limited in the low 12s or better.
I'm not going crazy spending money on my heads (have you seen the prices people ask for worked LT1 heads?!?!) but I am treating them to some mild work. The cam I think I've settled on is a relatively mild cam, the Comp 305 (220/230 .510/.510 114 - - - .544/.544 with my 1.6rrs). I hope the car will run a high-to-mid 12 as-is and I plan to add a 12psi blower in the future.
I do suggest getting the LT4 heavy duty timing set. And a cam that is eerily similar to the one I'm gonig with is the Hot Cam so you might consdier the Hot Cam kit that comes with the cam (duh!), awesome 1.6 roller rockers, springs (I would go for Crane duals though), and the requisite keys, shims, and locks.
There are a bunch of different cams out there for LT1s now so you're not limited to what I suggested. And you can always get a custom grind. Comp Cams did a custom grind for my buddy's mustang and they sold it to him for the same price as any other cam.
If you haven't called marcus yet, ask him about building you an LT1. I didn't have him do it because I'm across the country - but since you're relatively close (any distance in texas is never TOO close
)
If you really don't want to get your hands dirty he'll build the motor and install everything for you. I wish I could have done that!!!
