Smoke from the vents? WTF???

While driving home from work with everything on: lights, wipers, fogs, and radio, Some smoke came out from the A/C vents. It had no odor and was white/grey color. It occured when I stepped on the gas from standing still. It freaked the heck out of me. What does this smoke mean? Could it be simply water vapors from all the rain? Or it's something more serious. Help me please!!!

Hummer,

I think I know where you're going with this one. If it were smoke from overheated insulation on electrical wiring, it would have been accompanied by a distinct, pungent odor. If it were steam from a leaky heater core, you should have detected a sweet odor of anti-freeze. If it was water vapor steaming off the heater core, it would have no odor and should eventually stop. Accellerating from a stop may have sloshed water standing in the plenum onto the warm heater core, causing steam.

Run the heater/vent on maximum heat with a medium fan for a few minutes to see if you can dry up the potential water.

Whew... I drove it a little more today and it doesn't smoke at all. I'm relieved! Thanks Vader!

That happened to me once. Cruisin down the highway, sunny afternoon, vent on, and all of a sudden white smoke comes out of the vents. No odor, and it lasted only a second or two. It freaked me out pretty bad, though. That was three years ago and it hasn't happened since, but to this day I wonder what it was.

For those of you who experience this, you might want to check the drain holes at the bottom of the evaporator enclosure. Normal condensation and rainfall/snowmelt that enters the cowl intake is supposed to drain from the cowl vent and evaporator case. If the drains are plugged with debris, you may be getting enough accumulation to slpash the heater core on occassion, creating the steam. This is especially true on '87 and earlier cars without the hot water valve for the heater.

Last time I was in a car and that happened it caught fire LOL. Poor old 1995 lumina went up in a huge fire. It was crazy. They said it started in the dash because it was melted from the inside out

i always thought that was condensation in the chilled air coming off the evaporator? it happens to every car i've had once in a while, only with the a/c on.
