4th gen drive shaft in a 3rd gen

I have an '82 Z28 with a 200 4R. Will an aluminum driveshaft out of a 4th gen car fit?

measure the length... and check the number of spindles... if they match up... then it'll work great... you may need to get it balanced though... if it's in good shape you should be fine...

It should fit fine. Summit list the same part # for 82-02 F body

I know one from an LT1 era car will work fine... not sure about LS1.

The Aluminum 1LE, LT1 and LS1 dr shafts are all the same length and are interchangeable on 3rd gen cars with a 5sp & 700R4.
Early 82 transmissions may be a another question if they will fit??
Check the length before buying to be safe. Summit's Catalog is not always correct, if you get my drift.

Yes, but the LS1s are much bigger in diameter, so you're going to have to check for exhaust/torque arm clearance too.

Not only that, the LS1 shafts seem weaker for some reason. I've seen a couple peeled open.

NO

the 200-4R driveshafts are approximately 2.92" longer than 700/4L60/T5/T56 driveshafts from 3rd & 4th gens.

sorry to yell. Just tired of this question and then people ignoring the fact of what transmission the car has.

1LE=2 3/4 dia
LT1=2 3/4 dia
LS1=3 dia
What is so weak about the LS1 Shaft is the LS1 engine.

And the drivers... I got a LS1 dshaft behind my 400 (a little stouter than your average LS1) and its holding up fine.

CRAP!!! I'm a little late reading this one jmd is right (as usual). the 200 4r driveshaft is about 3 inches longer.

can a machine shop make it longer?

The tubing cannot be lengthened. The full length of the tubing can be replaced with a new tube.

Good luck w/ your driveshaft project. I just got my steel 69 firebird shaft balanced and the rear joint replaced.

I'm better off selling it then. by time I get all of that done I could have bought one that was already made to fit.
