Old Camel hump heads- will they work?
Old Camel hump heads- will they work?
My grandfather has some from an old 302 chevrolet. They are ported out the *** and have some huge valves in them. I am going to be switching to carb in a month, can I use those heads when I do? I know I will need an alternator bracket.

Yeah, but kiss your air conditioning goodbye. I found a bracket that only required a little modification to run from the back of the alternator to the front header bolt, but making bracketry to hold the compressor is going to be a nightmare. I'm probably going to sell the heads and buy something with accessory holes real soon.
Those heads that you're looking at are 2.02/1.6 heads that are designed for high rpm usage. if they are ported, that's going to be even more aimed at high rpm. Those old 302s layed down at low rpm, and this is going to be the same way only worse. The motor is going to be a dog below 3000 rpm, but if you build it right it can be a screamer above that rpm. Just plan accordingly.

Jim is dead on unless they are casting #186's. I have a pair of those and they too came off the 302's and some 350's in '69-'70. They came with the 1.94 valves stock, and these were taken to 2.02's.The stock runner size is like 157, as where you know newer heads range from 190-230cc.
The #186's doublehumps came out with factory accessory holes. If these are them, great. If not, you will need to rig something. Also, be aware that they are probably 64cc combustion chambers, which could effect your compression.
Good luck!

Mine are the 461 fuelie castings. I really have very little to compare them to, but from what I understand the only GM heads that outflowed these were the 461X heads that had the 2.02s. Supposidly the only GM heads since that would outflow them are the vortec heads. I don't really have any proof though. I just know I want to can them and get something with accessory holes.

292 turbo castins from the mid 70s would out flow any prievious castings. these heads are predty damm expensive.461 are flow pleny off air for any street motor, you will have to fab up some brakets

You do not want to try to get those to work on that car. Like the other post said, a pair of 186s would be OK though, since those have the same ports as the older fuelie heads, but they also have the bolt holes; however the 461s don't even have the bosses where the bolt holes go, so you can't even drill them. The later double-humps also have the better CC design with the "squish" area which the 461s do not, and so are far less prone to detonation. Overall the 461 is not really suitable for any kind of a modern street buildup.
BTW I have a set of 186s on the 400 in my 83. Mine still have the 1.94 valves though, if I get around to spending money on heads, it will be something aftermarket. As cheap and plentiful as those are nowadays, there's no longer any point in trying to massage a set of factory castings.

Thanks guys, I appriciate the info. I hope to be able to do the switch over for about 1000 dollars. That will include a holley 700(used)- performer rpm intake, camel hump heads, keith black forged flat top pistons with 10:1 compression ratio, and I am not sure what cam to use yet. I have a victory junior intake, but I would have to have a stall conv. and I dont want to have to have one. Would the performer RPM work?

The Performer RPM would be the best bet. It will pull up to 6500.

Also, you will probably have to have a new alternator bracket built, depending on the casting. Some of the 327 camels have only 61-62cc combustion chambers, which may give you some flow problems if you're running them on a 350. (A buddy of mine found this out when he built a roller engine with .550 lift and used the 327 doublehumps).

A flat-top 350 with those heads will give you about 10.3:1 CR. With those heads, you will definitely have problems with modern gas unless you are going to run racing or airplane gas all the time. The "squish" area causes turbulence in the chamber which creates improved mixing of the air and fuel. When the gas first started going to crap back in the late 60s (the octane went from 102 down to 98 or so) that was the first thing the factory did to try to compensate. AFAIK all Chevy engines from 69 up had the improved CC to deal with these reduced quality fuels.
All in all, those heads are IMHO not the right thing for your application. They were great heads in their day but unfortunately that day is gone.
