Distributor gear got chewed up bad....

Well, I'm cruisin back home, and I nail it pretty hard in 2nd gear. At about 3500 RPM, the engine starts backfiring bad. It died and I could not get it restarted. I tried a bunch of different things and ended up pulling the distributor. The gear on one side only is almost completely gone. It's an MSD Pro Billet distributor and the cam is a Comp Xtreme Energy XR282 hydraulic roller. What would cause this to happen only on one side of the gear?? I'm going to check the distributor height tomorrow against the manifold. Any other ideas?? Thanks.

Did you buff/polish the distributor drive gear on the camshaft before you installed it?

Is the distributor shaft running true?

Is the oil pump operating smoothly?

Oil pump shaft bent/damaged?
