timing problem

ok i just picked up a 78 C10, the previous owner just replaced the head gasket, didnt mark the rotor or body so the timing is way off, he also lost the keys, well today i had a lock smith come and make me a set, he cranks it over and it back fires blowing off my air cleaner setup i made, through the carb.

i messed with it all tonight after i got home from work, its out im the lot next to my house, im using floodlights for light and im sweetin like a pig, but anyways

not i got it down to crank over and almost start but then backfire out the carb again.

now i dont want to take off the headers and find TDC like tht unless i have to, is there another way to find TDC without alot of removing parts and such like gaskets.

thanks for any help.

Disable the ignition and fuel. Pull #1 spark plug. Have buddy put finger over spark plug hole while you slowly tap the motor over with the starter. When buddy's finger pops off the hole from compresion stop cranking. Turn motor over by hand to line the balancer mark up with the 0 on the timing pointer. Pull distributor up some so rotor movers. Point rotor just before #1 terminal on cap so that when the distributor (dizzy) is dropped back in the rotor lines up with #1 terminal. If the distributor wont go back in you need to pull the dizzy all the way out and with a long screw driver align the oil pump drive with the slot on the bottom of the dizzy gear. After its dropped in snug the dizzy down but not to tight to allow it to move. The timing should be close enought now to allow the engine to fire after you reconnect the ingition and fuel. With the engine running set timing with the light.
