I like those car's even though there motor has been labeled one of th eworst small blocks of all time. The motor is a little 301 and I don't beleive they make tat much power, the turbo is what saves it. If they don't want alot for it and it is in good shape I would buy it. My friend is the orignal owner of 1 it nis a pace car with rear disc and recaro seats it is nice.

I tell you what, I've had several offer to buy my 81 Z and I'll be _amn it I let go of the last year of the big body.
There's alottttt of room under the hood, after you pull all that emissions crap out, to stuff a big block in those 2nd Gens !!!
There lot's of after market parts to get then looking factory new.
As far as HP and Torque goes - like most early eighties hotrods (I know a pun), torque is good, but HP is -- well -- sucks...
My 81 with a 350 & Q-Jet E4ME was around 175HP @ 4000, and 275FP @ 2400.
The typical late seventies early eighties 2nd gen, under powered and over weight.
But you know what, the days of seeing then on the street all the times has all but dried up, and these beauties are becoming rear.

they are SLOW.....were talking like a 17 in the quarter and I dont think Ive ever read an article on modifying that poor excuse for an engine.......If the body's good I could see making it a sleeper via a big block or modded small block.

Those cars made 210 hp (positive) and around 400 tq.
I know this cause a friend has one.
I found an old Chilton with all the power figures and thats what it had for torque.

With that said.....that thing is a slug anyway you slice it.
81 was the first year for computer controlled cars.
The computers were not up to the challenge until a few years later.
I would never buy a 81-83 GM vehicle.

the 301 turbo, i dont know if 81 was difrent from 80 but my famly had a 1980 TTA with the 301 turbo. it was crappy off the line because you had to spool that turbo but if your going 40 or so and step on it it'll haul some *** just had a takeoff , 1/4 , 0-60
but that 80 ta looks great
power was about 225hp and round 300 tq

345TQ in actuality.
I would say that either the power curve has a serious spike in it, or someone at Pontiac was lying about the output. Its a solid 16 second car, and 2nd gens are not that heavy that it would eat up all that power.

BTW, the 220HP/320TQ 79 TA would run low 15's and some even saw 14's, so that should give you an idea about the power numbers on the TA Turbo and how little they mean.
