non-3rdgen question(wifes car)

Does anyone know what is invovled in replacing the cam sensor/crank sensor. i know that the harmonic balancer has to pulled for the crank sensor, but how about the cam? It seems as if the timing is off, but this set up is non adjustable. It drinks more gas than my 87 GTA! i dont want to take it to a shop if i can do it. help please, I an going to take some leave next month and we need this car to go home. Any help is very welcome.

thank you.

it'd help if you said what kind of car/engine it is.

Most cam and crank sensors are just held in by a couple of bolts and are easily replaced. (some are a PITA though )

As stated above......we DO need to know what you are working on.

Sorry, 3.8 (3800) tuned port injection
4- speed auto. non-supercharged.
I just though of something, if it was the cam or the crank sensor, wouldn't it miss at all rpm's? just a thought. could it be something simple like a spark plug or a plug wire? I need some input so i dont have to ripp it all apart.
thank again!

I'm sorry, but i'm ROFLMAO. You haven't even checked the basics and you're pointing your finger at a cam position sensor. This is the funniest thing i've heard all day.
I think you need to start by describing the problem, and if you haven't even checked the basics yet, don't come back till you have. Apparently you have a miss of some nature, and that could be caused by anything from worn out tune-up components, to fuel problems, to ECM and sensor problems, or even mechanical failure in the engine, hell, maybe your fuzzy dice are getting faded from too much sun exposure. Basically anything.

The reason I brought up the sensor issue is because we have only had this car for 6 months. When we bought it, I did some reading up on it. Carpoint said that cam sensor failure is the most common mechanical failure in this model/year. All I wanted to know is if any thought I should be concerned if I too could have this same problem. This is my wifes car. I almost never drive it. She describes it as lagging on uphill roads @45 mph or more and she said the it all the sudden hard on gas. It does sputter on cold start-ups, and climbing. I WOULD check the timing but it aint like my good ole HEI sutup on my GTA. You cant even adjust the timing on this I dont think. So all I am doing is asking if "what do I do, what SHOULD I check, and COULD it be the sensor, if so how do I know for sure?" But like I said earlier, wouldnt it miss all the time? Normal driving,(flat straight-a-ways, little load on the engine) she says it seems o.k. What gives?

change the air filter and the fuel filter along with the above mentioned general tune-up. This should make a vast improvement on the performance issue.

I have an '89 chevy cavalier with the 2 litre/DIS(direct ignition system or distributorless ignition system). 2 years ago my CKP or crankshaft position sensor crapped out on me. The dealer(Hudiberg chevrolet) in Fort Worth, Texas tried to convince me that the reason my engine would die after it warmed up and not start for about 30 minutes each time, was because the ECM($250) was bad and the ignition module($225) was bad and the crank sensor was bad($25). Well I decided not to let the dealer "fix" my car and I took it home. I knew the ign. module was good because I had replaced it earlier and I did not believe the ECM was bad because of the dealer lying to me about the module so I replaced the $25 sensor and have been driving the car 50 miles a day for 2 years now with narry a prob! HA HA screw you Hudiberg chevorlet! BTW the sensor is located on the side of the block right below the ignition module if you feel the need to replace it. (at least that is where it is on my engine)

LOW performance people should drive low performance vehicles!

With symptoms like that, as stated above, I would check the basics....wires, plugs, fuel and air filters.

My experiance is that if a crank sensor is no good than it won't start.

We ALWAYS forget to check the basics (I'm guilty), just because its got all this high tech stuff in it doesn't mean that the high tech stuff is always the problem. (most the time its not)
