Did I get shafted?

hey i'm a pround new owner of a 1984 Pontiac Trans Am T-Tops. It has a 4 wheel dics new paint and a 350 dropped in her from a early 80's Z-28. The body is rust free and dent free however every little thing you can think of is broken (prob due to the engine swap). And the tranny is shot to hell, she needs some loving care. However the t-tops don't leak and all power acceroies work and it has ???,??? miles on it.........i paid $1,100......i think i got a good deal or am i a moron?

Your trans being messed up is not a plus. But new paint is good.

For comparison : I got my 88 GTA in 1999 for $2,500 (dealer asking $3,800). Small dent in driver's door. Like new paint. 350 engine. Big wing on the back. No probs, except a/c doesn't work.

I would guess you paid a little bit too much, but with the new paint job, hmmmm, hard to say.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me especially if you're a good mechanic. Just find a good T56 tranny and drop it in there. Matt

I paid $5000 for my Z-28. Completly stock, everything worked, great looking car. I did pay too much though, coulda got it for less if I waited longer I think, but then again the clown was asking $6500 for it...

IMO, for 1100 if it moves at all you're did okay...

I paid $2500 for mine with 60,000 original miles on the odometer. AC didn't work and the paint was bad when I picked it up. Everything else on the car was mint. Now she is at 72,000 and has a stronger heart

i think you got an AMAZING deal. If your t's dont leak chances are the frame is straight. Get come sfc's quick time to keep it that way. As for the transmission that sucks because you cant drive her right away but i couldnt think of a better reason to put in a t-56 6 speed tranny. And past that your golden. I think your were lucky to come accross the car and smart for picking it up...i bet you could sell it for double as is.

I paid $1300 for my '89 IROC-Z 5.7 in May.

Sold as "not running". Got it running within two hours with a new ignition cylinder!

I ed the guy by telling him the computer was gone and the engine was prob dead too. He was some import tuner deadhead who didn't know any better. For once VATS actually helped me out!

Least the stuff is already broken and didn't happen far from your house on a trip or something lol

I paid $1700 for my Iroc, 165k miles, but it had stuff like the Stage 2 chip, subframe connectors, headers, 3" exhaust, etc.

For my '84 Z-28 with ZERO rot... $500. But that was in the family

Around here (mn) that would be a very good deal. My friend bought a 84 camaro w/v6 and 5-speed and needed new paint and a little body work for 2K, then beat the pea out of it, sold it with a major rod knock for $1500.

So, I think you got a nice deal

i paid 1200 for my car, because it had a knock sound, so we made him go down 400$ in the price because we'd probably have to replace the motor... turns out some moron had used bolts that were too long to hook the flywheel to the torque convertor... it bottomed out and didnt tighten all the way, so then the other two slowly loosened up, and bang... a knock sound... it burned oil and leaked tho, and had crossfire injection, so we replaced it anyway...

interior was nice (no rips, no stains) paint was ok... (has orange peel tho)

good tranny (still using it) everything else was good

all ive done to the exterior of the car since was remove the oxidation...

Paid $4500 for mine 112k miles, 305/5spd. New tires. Didn't smoke at all. He was asking 5500, but the bank would only go 4500. Everything worked great. Paint was original, but real nice for a 11yr. old car at the time.

well here's the update as i speak the tranny's gettin rebuilt cause i don;t really have the change for a T-56 so when this one decides to leave this world here comes 6 gears and come to find out it has WS6 rear end with posi, subframe connectors, however the t-tops don't leak a drop but the dam* windows do, so they are goin to get "engineered" when it comes outta the shop sat. Thanks guys......and cross your fingers the engine holds up for the t-56

I got my T-Top 1987 Trans-AM 305 TPI A4 with 75,000 original miles for $2600.00. One minor dent in the body. Like new paint. Except for one spot on the bumper. Never had any T-Top leaks. Good tires and everything. It ran pretty good to. The interior was kinda rough upholstery wise but my dash was perfect. Center console was ok. Most of my plastics were F'd pretty good. But they were cheap to replace.

I could have done a little better for the money. At least with the interior. But I love the car and most of my interior is near mint now. I have a couple things left to do. But she's looking good now. All in all the best $2600.00 I've ever spent. It's given me some good times and working on it is a hobby that I enjoy.

Theres an adjustment you can perform to take care of that most likely. Unless the seals are really that bad.

Sounds like a good deal to me if it runs straight.

I got my basic 1987 2.8 for $300. 70,000 miles.

I still get a good chukle at the low proces people pay on the board for thier cars. Colorado is high priced for any thirdgen doesent matter if its running or not 21 years old or newer. I paid $995 even for my 82 from a **** car dealer. Minor surface rust, fbuard PS door and fender, worn but not ruined seats and to top it off the engine was presumed blown "LG4". Only 78K actuall miles. Engine wasent blown flat cam, 20 hours latter body was straight car was running, total invested in getting the car runable and respectable $2300 including purchace of the car.

I could sell the car for $3500/4000 easy, probaly 2 days in the paper and it would have a new owner.

Not that I would seeing how Ive got well over 5k in it now.

Its funny to me that you mention that. I bought my car in Loveland Colorado. It was from a used car dealer, he only had sports cars and 4x4s on his lot... I know I paid more than I should have, but it was EXACTLY what I was looking for...

Actually a few months ago, here in S. FL. I stopped at a lot that had a white Z-28. It was a 91 with Ttops, auto, 350 TPI, power everything. It was a beautiful car, dam near perfect. THey had $6000 sticker price on it! About a week later when I drove by again, it was gone! I had no intention of buying it, just wanted to see what it had and how much it was going for...

I guess I did pretty good a year ago. Got a 91 Z28/350 TPI with 48,000 miles for $2800. Didn't run. Put a fuel pump and two window motors in and drove it home. Guy wanted out of it because he still owed the bank money. I paid it off and ran. Had brand new BFG tires and the interior smelled from the windows being half way down for a year in Hawaii. A SERIOUS cleaning corrected the interior, which had ZERO tears, added a Kenwood Excelon stereo and Infinity speakers, new headliner and some TLC to the paint. Was perfectly happy.

Bottom line... If you are happy, don't worry what other people think. Enjoy YOUR car and make it better to suit YOUR taste. That's what it's all about. Then go out and smoke a Mud Stain or two for fun!!!

I paid $22,800 in 1983 (ordered it from factory) for my Z28 with LG4. That was 106K miles ago. The best money I have ever spent on anything to date, period. I have had more fun with that car than any other item i have ever purchased.

but I am old and naive.

I paid $2400 for my '87 IROC-Z28 off Ebay. It had all the options I really care about, aside from a 350, manual tranny (which you couldn't get together anyway), and it had a red interior.

The lister didn't really tell the truth when he described the car, but oh well... I got my Z28 with T-tops, G92, all the goodies including power everything and its a good platform to mod.

I bought my wife a 1990 IROC-Z for $1300 in April. Nice car, but owner described it as a 350. I knew better by the decals, VIN, underhood sticker, and the speedo.... but - didn't want to sound rude, since it was a 1990 Z for only $1300.

When I bought it:

Soon after:

Paid $1200 for mine, 89 TA, L05, 119000miles. Looks great but paint is bad on the spoiler and on the roof by the sunroof. Motor runs like a champ though and it has rally chromes and new mastercraft T/A's

I bought my 86 IROC for 2K and it came with new tires and new paint. Only needed a tune up, starter, and a new speedo cable since it sat a few years after the original owner had it painted.

But I was looking for one for a couple years before my wife came accross that one. I looked at one a guy bought off of ebay for 5K, it was an 88, had rust all over it, needed paint badly, head liner and interior was hanging everywhere, didn't run well and he only wanted what he paid for it, =).

I'd rather buy one for cheaper and use the extra money to upgrade it.

That's got to be wrong, I paid $14,500 for my 92 RS new, at the time Z/28's were going for 18-20 thousand.

I bought my 92 RS with L03 and T-5, 130,000 miles on it for $2,000. Runs perfect but the front bumper and driver side fender were fubared though. It came with a fender but left me in search of the bumper. All I can find around here are 83 Camaros in the junkyards and they are all black with silver ground effects too!

I payed 1200 for my Berlinetta. I spent another 500 to get it running properly and legally driveable (was out of state plate, needed to pass through emissions). The only things wrong with it now is the crappy paint (a couple spots where clear are coming off) and a knee size dent on the driver side... Oh, and for some reason the driver's side has no hub caps, but the passenger side has both

for what you payed, with a new paint job, good body, 350, I think that you got a great deal, cherish her!
