cheapest place for performance shortblock?

whats the cheapest place for performance shortblock?

400 prefered, but 383 will do...

this is for my brother.. he picked up some raggy 86 camaro and wants to do a engine swap..... thing is, hes never built a engine before, and he lives in SC (im in texas) so i cant show him..

im just looking for a good cheap shortblock that he can get, slap the sheetmetal and some heads on, and drive it... somthing with decient compression, but hes never going to run nitrous or make any huge power..... so a higher compression otherwise stock bottom end would work...

i dont know of any decient shops since ive always built my own...
any suggestions?

I saw this in a hotrodding magazine. Dunno how good, reliable or customer friendly this place is. Just click on the online catalog. I saw some of thier shortblock prices and they werent too bad.

I was going to order my 383 from here http://www.wheelermotorsports.com/index.html but ended up getting it built from a local shop. Doug a long block is a complete engine and a short block is just crank, rods, pistons, rings, and bearings assembled in a block.

Paw Lists a shortblock 383 4 bolt 350 block 9:1,10:1 or 11:1
block,crank(400),rods,pistons,rings,bearings,cam,timing set, with balanced assembly for $1,395
Long block 383
All the above + Heads, Lifters, Pushrods, Oil pump, Gaskets, and Rocker arms for $1895

Or a 377 9:1 or 10:1 400 block with 3.48 stroke 2 bolt main
short block $1095, long block $1495

BTW 400 blocks are getting hard to find you might end up finding a 350 with a stroker crank is more common and less expensive these days.

shortblock usually refers to just the bottom end... the block, crank, rods, pistons, somtimes the cam is included, somtimes not...

its pretty much everything below the heads.... it usually doesnt have the oil pan or oil pump either....
