Can I put a 3/8" short nut fitting onto a 5/16" line, or will the flare not hold due to the size difference?

sure you can but i don't think it'd seal very good. interesting question, only 1/32 differance per side. might work, but seems to me the risk and trouble of doing it again wouldn't be worth it. what are you working on?

I just got my Phantom tranny temp gauge and it has a 1/8" sensor. The kit comes with 1/2" and 3/4" fittings that need to be welded into the tranny or something (Pan I guess) and the sensor screws through it.

Well, since I have a leak in my 5/16" tranny line, I was thinking that I could get a fitting from Russell that origionally is designed for putting a fuel filter inline or soemthing, but would work with my sensor too. The only thing is it only comes in 3/8" and 1/2" sizes.
