I just bought an 86 IROC and the motor in it has center bolt valve covers. That should make the motor newer than 86 Doesn't it. Also is there any way to tell if its 305 or 350?

I am almost positive that 87 was the first year of centerbolt valve covers, but I could be wrong. Since it's not the original motor probably, the stickers won't be accurate for engine size. You can try a few things. The size of the block is usually stamped on it somewhere. I think it's in the rear, but I don't know which size. The only other thing I can think of off the top of my head is if you happen to pull one of the heads off, you can measure the cylinder bore. Anyone else have any ideas?

The casting number for the case is located on the rear ledge of the block just to the left of center. There should also be a four-digit date code for the casting. Remeber that the model year production typically begins in September, so a "10-86" casting would be for a 1987 Model car.

Incidentally, the center bolt rocker covers were introduced on the 1987 model year.
