I just asked this about my 81 Z28 motor I'm rebuilding..it's DAMN low. 8.3:1 I think.

Why bother spending any money at all on that garbage? IIRC that is one of the motors that had the 1.7something intake valves. Basically you can't make chicken salad out of chicken $%*!.

If you're going to spend any money on machine work, do it to some decent cores.

The lower CR will cause it to produce less power, but not a whole lot less by itself. On the other hand when it only put out 140 HP or less to begin with, every one counts.

The CR isn't the only issue with that motor. The heads are some of the very worst ever put on a small block, possibly only exceeded in infamy by the ones they put on 267s. I would not waste a single penny of money doing anything whatsoever to them, since you can just go to the junkyard and get a set of LG4 heads (416 casting) off a Caprice or something, and improve the engine's performance dramatically. And we all know how much of a screamer the LG4 is in stock trim.... what you are working on is much worse.

My friend has a pair of 79 Camaros. Well, he just sold 1, but anyway. Both had the 2bbl 305 and he did a lot of homework. They were 8.4:1, although other models may have varied somewhat. The 2bbl 305 was rated at 130hp but had a very high torque rating, although I couldn't tell why. My 2.8 camaro would kill it. But, on one of them he put an Edelbrock Performer manifold, Holley 750, Hooker full length headers and hooker dual exhaust, and the car felt about as strong as my TPI 305 IROC. That's despite his motor having SEVERE blow-by. Overall, I'd say that the motor isn't worth a damn unless you rebuild it, but it is possible to get some mild performance out of it.

This engine is going to replace my old LG4 and i still habve it. So would doing the heads from the old LG4 be worth it? Are they really that much better than whats on the engine now?
