LG4;L69;Etc;etc

I see these abbreviations and a bunch of others throughout these posts, but I don't know what they mean. Are they the designations for the different engines set by the manufacturers, or what? If so, which is which? I have an 85 Z28~~~~~~will someone help me out??????? thanks!

Yeah those are engine codes.

LG4 - 305 Low Output Carbed
L69 - 305 High Output Carbed
LO3 - 305 Throttle Body Injection
L98 - 350 Tuned Port Injection
Cant think of 305 TPI right now, or Crossfire.

You have an LO3

LB9 is 305 TBI and you don't have a TBI 305 unless someone swapped it in. You do have a 305 though, either TPI, HI-PO carb or LO-PO carb. Do you have a round air cleaner? And if you take off your air cleaner do you have 4 holes in the top where the air goes in? If you have two then it's TBI, that and injecters.

305tbi wasn't available in 85.
For 85 you could get either
LG4, 305 4bbl
L69, 305 4bbl
LB9, 305 tuned port injection.

Mike92~ yes, I have a round air cleaner and two air intake holes, so which one do I have? (Forgive me almighty Camaro gurus for not knowing the difference. I'm still fairly new to the excitement that is the Heartbeat of America!)

If it looks like this, it's an L69.

Yeah, it looks like that except there is only one air intake which is on the driver's side going into the air cleaner, and those two hoses coming across the very front of yours from behind the air intake are absent on mine. Now can you fellas set me straight? THANKS!

If you only have two throttle bore opening them you either have a 2barrel carb or TBI. Do you have two injectors on top of the bores with 4 wires going to them, two each. You may have TBI or someone converted to a holley TBI.

Sounds to me like your car has the LG4 and someone removed the A/C (that's what those lines are).

BTW, George apparently has his A/C compressor unbolted from the engine and just laying over there; the lines ordinarily come up from under the duct rather than going over the top.

No, I still have a/c. I dunno. I think somebody did about 10 different things under the hood w/ NO performance gains whatsoever just to screw with whoever got the car next!

BTW~ what's the dif between the LO 4bbl and the HO 4bbl? Just what it sounds like, hp?

Easy way to do this! Open your center console and find the sticker w/ all of the RPO codes. In these codes you will find the L69, LG4, or the LB9 engine code!

The differnce between L69 and LG4-

Heads- larger valves
camshaft-meaner!
aluminum intake
dual snorkle air cleaner

thats about it, although maybe a different carb and prom chip. It was a pretty mean motor for it's day.

Nope sorry 87ILe, Lg-4 had aluminum intakes. and the valves are the same size. 1.85 intake and 1.5 exhaust. MY friend had an LG-4 and his intake was aluminum and he found some L69 heads and had same size valves as LG4. Hey, scan a picture of you iduction with the air cleaner off and post it.

L69 vs. LG4:

190 HP rated vs. 145
different cams
absolutely identical heads in all respects
different pistons
X rods vs. normal ones
same intake most years
different carbs (-04 vs. -01)
electric fan vs. clutch fan
3.73 gears vs. crap (2.93, 3.08, or 3.23)
fiberglass hood vs. steel some years (mine for instance)
different distributors
different chips (timing curves especially)
dual snorkel cold-air air cleaner vs. the usual
2¼" Y-pipe to 2¾" equiv. oval vs. 2" round all the way
4-bolt cat vs. grocery-cart version
2¾" exhaust vs. same as above
cannon ***** vs. golf *****

I might have missed something, anybody else with an L69 help me out. Basically they were exactly the same only completely different.

Ok, now for my next stupid ?. What's the RPO? Is it just an obvious label in the console? Or even easier, doesn't the VIN# tell which mo is in a car?

your vin # will tell u whats in the car but that may have been changed during the swap. The 8th digit of your vin will be "E" if you have the 305 TBI motor. The RPO stands for, something production option i think, well whatever, its a sheet full of 3 digit codes, usually found in your middle console or under the seat, some are harder to find...

if you cant find it, take off the air cleaner and inspect the unit that the injectors are on, if its a TBI, i beleive it should say TBI 300 (i think , sorry a bit rusty) somewhere on the unit, look for a name like holley, or whatever... most likeley you have a carb man because 305 TBI was not introduced until 1988 on the SC model

RB83, what are X rods ? I have also seen
mentioned in the literature that the L69 has
a lightweight flywheel.

X rods are rods that have a little "X" forged on them. (Duh!!!) They're beefier around the place where rods always break, between the bolt and where the beam meets the journal. "Pink" rods are X rods that have an extra heat- and chemical- treating step to harden them. There have also been "O" rods and "B" rods that are marginally better than the unmarked ones.

I've heard different things about the flywheel too. I'm really not sure what the real deal is. Maybe someone with GM part # access could run that info down.

BTW Tom, I'm moving to So Cal in a week (Carlsbad area); what are the rules over there regarding emissions certification for existing cars from other locales?

VIN codes (8th digit=engine):

H = 305 LG4
G = 305 L69
E = 305 TBI

RPO = Regular Production Option

Thanks tuc & rb83. I just went out and checked the VIN and it is an H engine. So now do I have the "puss" V8, or what? (that's alright, though, I can still whip my mom's Accord) Do any of you guys know off hand what the power ratings were on those?

Yes, the puss motor, but usually pretty reliable! Mine has 198,000 on it, and I'm still not afraid to rev it to 5 grand even when sort of cold. Carries good oil pressure (1/2 of the gauge scale when hot) and has had little done to it ever.

See below for it's future! :-)

See, I have this Delimma too, I have the LG4 supposedly, But I tell ya its No Puss Motor.

I can Smoke My tires through Second, and The only cars that have beat me was a Mercedes C class and a Twin Turbo Eclipse.
The Merdeces Only Beat me Because I hit some Bumps in the road and My Shocks were still The originals with 147k on them, I had to let off or Mack it.
The Eclipse Beat me Cause it was a rolling start and I Chirped second and Lost traction. ( car got sideways ) Now does that really sound like the anemic LG4? I sure as hell didnt think so, but I guess It is... its got the single Air cleaner and LO cat too so it Must be.

I origially thought i had the L69, but I have the LG4 RPO in my console Box.
The Motor Shows Zero Signs On being worked On So I doubt that it was swapped.

There is Some other weird stuff about the car, IE the Vin Says Z28, but it has Zero markings aside from the "Camaro" on the rear Bumper

But I dont care, its Fast, It gets me from here to ther till the Ranchero Is done, and Its Fun

Does anyone know what In the way of Dealer options there Were On these cars ? Im New to the world Of Fbodys really, I know in the 60's You could get Falcons ( and most other cars ) With all Sorts of crazy Dealer options

( How about a 70 1/2 falcon with a 428 CJ making 355 hp ? )

Or maybe a 65 with the "K" Motor with 4spd Toploader Rated at 291 HP from a 289ci SBF.

Did they do this **** with the Camaro's ?

It would have been very unlikely to get a motor that wasn't part of the available factory motors.
