Code 32. . . So what?

My car is occasionally showing a code 32. Now I know that means it is most likely the EGR valve, but so what? What does that thing do? Or will something not work, because of it? Basically, convince me why I should even bother putting another one in.

That is unless of course it's one of the other 2 possible problems, but I wouldn't even know where to start on those.

basically, the EGR lets exhaust gas into the combustion chambers when you're at cruising speeds. This cools the combustion chambers to where the ECM can advance the timing without causing the motor to knock. If the EGR is not working, the ECM will try to advance the timing until the knock sensor catches it, causing the timing to slam way back down. So you'll pretty much be going down the highway with the timing jumping back and forth like a kangaroo on crack. it also will cause a rough idle.

hm... I get the code 32 thing on the highway...

how "rough" of an idle are you talking about? I don't think my idle is rough, it sounds pretty normal to me. it does bounce around just a tad after it gets warmed up and the idle drops, but I wouldn't consider it rough.

I shouldn't really say 'rough' idle, more like your tach needle won't stay still at idle. to fix a code 32, first you need to determine whether it is the EGR solenoid, EGR valve, or any other part which is causing the computer to throw a code. If you own a repair manual, it should cover the procedures for testing these parts. all you should need to test them should be a vacuum tester, unless your car has an electronic EGR (I think '90 and up have them) check the solenoid, valve, (it likes to clog up with carbon deposits), the vacuum lines from the solenoid to the valve, vacuum lines leading up to the solenoid, electrical connections to solenoid. If all of those check out fine, then get ready to break out the rifle cleaning brush, chances are the EGR passageways in the intake and heads are clogged. Good luck

Well, mine's a 91 RS w/ a 305 TBI, so I guess it's electric.

So where is this thing located? And how do I change it out?

And just to finish up, a Code 32 is almost ALWAYS a bad EGR valve right?
