Now I have in mind what I want the car for. Just regular street use but to have more power then it has now. Now I just wanted to mod the engine and I was wondering what were the best mods to do to it and what kind of HP gain will I get. I am not a mechanic or anything myself. The very first thing to do if the car is make sure the car is running well , if its not running good you wont get much out of performence parts. The first mods everyone does on the tbi cars is headers, high flow cat , and a cat back exhuast I am not sure of the hp you will get ,but you will probably get about .5 off your quarter mile times and that is a real big difference. Do those to start and then I recommend the ultimate tbi mods that are listed on the tech boards, and then suspension. Do all of that to get you started . Good luck.

Id do: (1st....then I'd work on the rear-end THEN the big stuff)

Open element
headers
high flow or no cat
and a decent catback (hooker )

After those basic mods guys over on the TBI board will suggest:

lt1 camshaft
edelbrock TBI intake
and world product s/r torquer 305 heads.

All those engine mods will have to accompany alot of chip tuning.

I would also suggest getting some suspension mods:

Definetly a posi unit
and for a mild TBI engine some 3.42 gears should do nicely.
With some good tires and you should be good there.

If you wanna keep it mild thats about the right setup there. I would also recommend sub-frame connectors. I need some...damn T-tops.

Suspension work is a must...take me for instance. I have a mild brand new 350 crate with a nice intake, carb, full exhaust, and lt4 cam. However I have 2.73 gears without posi-traction. I cannot get on it from a stop...I will spin out of control. From a dead stop I will easily spin almost to 3rd gear. Even with 2.73 gears. It sucks.

I say go ahead and get the suspension done before you go out and make power. I learned from my mistakes...

 

Thanks for your help guys. Yeah it is running very very well. So I will start on what you guys suggest. I am very new at engines and all. So....none of these mods will be made by myself but one day I hope they will.

 

If your in high school I would suggest enrolling in an auto tech program if your school has one , I went in auto tech at my school at 16 not knowing more than how to do an oil change , and now at 18 I have almost completely rebuilt my car from the ground up,My car went from a 16 second piece of rust to a pretty good looking, fun to drive performence car. You be surprised at what you can learn in a short amount of time.Good Luck.

 

Im in college right now. I am also in a tough time in my life learning that I have some arthirtus and I play baseball for my college. So right now I have been thinking about careers that I can do other then baseball. I have come up with 3d animation [ Since I do that already] and since I do love cars and want to know more about them I thought maybe becoming a mechanic. Yet I just need to find a place to start. Thats cool man , I understand , I guess I was lucky to start working on cars when I did. I know how you feel , I am in college and I Co-own a bussiness with my friend right now , its tough to find time for anything, I bet its really hard to find time while playing baseball. Yeah I love my 1990 Camaro RS. It is my first car that I have bought. I got it about a month ago. It had 76,000 miles on it. The orignal owners were really great to it and the engine is very clean. I swear no one was ever in the back seat till I got it lol. Well hey if you have any ideas on how to mod my engine let me know. I am always open to suggestions. Other then puttin gin a 350 because I am the type of person once I get all I want out of a bigger engine I will want to go a step further.

 

I enrolled in Voctech in the mechanics class...I dropped it after 1 semester. Unlike everyone else I was WAY ahead of the class. I went in knowing nothing and came out knowing ALOT. I taught myself though. Im just one of those people...if i take it apart I can put it back together. My family is amazed at the ability I've gained in the 2 years I've had the camaro. I'm in college to so I can't put that much money torwards the car right now. However its a local school so I can still borrow cars if needed.

Just do what you can. Even minor mods are gonna cost you ALOT of labor. Start reading and tinkering. There is NOWAY I could afford the labor it would cost to do the stuff I have. Plus no mechanic would do what I have done to the car. No shop would carb a FI motor like I did...or did the belt routing, smog delete, and everything like I have. I bet I have saved 3 grand in labor easy. If not more.

Ive only taken my car to the shop twice...once for brakes before I learned how and for alignment...motor swap, cam swap, tranny swap, TBI --->Carb swap...everything all right here. Im 19 and Ive only been working on cars since I was 17...not bad...

 

That is great....Now I just have to find some places like that around me in Cali.
