speedometer hookups?

How do I hook up a mechanical speedo to a t5 with an electrical speedo output? I can never get a straight forward answer. What do I need to change on the trans to hook up the cable instead of the wire for the electric speedo? Also what speedo gears do Need with a t5 and 3.73 rearend? Thanks Kevin

You should be able to go to your GM dealer and buy the mechanical speedo drive gear. When I went to buy my new speedo gears, they had a chart on their computer that will tell you what gears you need for your rearend ratio.

You will also need what they call the sleeve (it holds the driven gear) that the cable screws on to.

Yes, get the driven gear and housing for a mechanical speedometer and swap them in.

Problem here is.... There needs to be a gear on the output shaft of the transmission to drive the gear that actually turn the cable. (driven gear...) In order to put on there (if it is even possible....) is to remove the output shaft of the tranny, pull off the toothed wheel the speed sensor reads, and press on a gear.

Now this all depends on how the speedometer works now. Some cars used a gear driven "sensor", in that case, there already is a gear on the output shaft. In later years, the switched to the toothed wheel on the output shaft, and the sensor read it directly.

Have a look at what ya got. If there is not a gear on the output shaft of the tranny, you are going to have a fun time of this.

On the 4L60E maybe, but I'm not aware of any factory 700R4/4L60 applications that were that way.
