pre-85 engines
pre-85 engines
I was planning on swapping a pre 85-350 into my 91 camaro cuz they are a LOT cheaper than the ones i have found. Where could I get an intake for one of those? or, can I put heads from after 85 on it?

Any heads will bolt to it. It's essentially the same block but w/ a 2 pc. rear main seal and does not have the provisions for a roller cam.

could use heads made after 86, or you could simply modify your intake to bolt up to the pre 86 heads, all the ports line up you just need to re angle the holes for the center 2 bolts on each side of the intake to make it fit, pretty simple to do really.

Yeah it will work. The main difference is just the intakes. The middle bolts will be angled different. Thats the only thing thats different really. If you get a head like the vortecs youll need a new intake anyways.

Chevy has used the same bellhousing bolt pattern for the 4.3 V6, small blocks, and big blocks from the early blocks clear up through the LT1. You will however have to have a flywheel for an older block. I have a normal t56 on my 78 block, but I have an aftermarket t56 flywheel for it where as you would need an early t5 flywheel I believe.

you said tremmec. I assumed that you were planning on using the aftermarket t56 which uses the stock t5 bellhousing, clutch, and flywheel. If you do that you just use the stuff that is made for a early t5. If you get one out of a fourtghen, it has to be 93-97 which were made by borg warner, you have to get an aftermarket flywheel which will run you about 350 by its self. If you dont know tremmec bought the t56 from borg warner and they made it durning the time of the LS1. Those transmissions will NOT fit on our motors at all.

any 6 speed trans really, i really like the t-56, and its the only one ive seen swapped into a 3rd gen... i saw these online http://www.standardtransmission.com/BW_T-56.html
and thought they might work, but i dunno...

Well, I figured you meant t56. Were you planning on a stock one out of a fourthgen or an aftermarket one. If you dont have a t5 now I would definately go w/ the fourthgen tranny. If you have a t5, it depends on how much it is worth to you that it is brand new.

i was guna get the aftermarket one from that site, w/ the shifter modded to be located where the one from the 700R4 shifter is now... but whatever is easier is what i will do
Im a bit confused on what flywheel to get... Ive read that the pre-86 engines have 3.58" crank bolt patterns, while my car, a 1991 model, accepts the 3.00" bolt pattern on the crank. But i still do need the 2-pice seal for adding the pre-86 engine... does anyone know where to get a flywheel with 3.00" crank patterns and a two piece seal configuration? or is that even what I need?
If you change to a 2 piece rear main seal block, you have to change to the other style flywheel bolt pattern. This means that if you go with an older block you have to get a different flywheel. You could get one for a t5 in an f body from a couple years earlier w/ the 2 piece style flywheel.

I just contaced the ppl i was gunna hve do it and they said now way in hell this setup would pass california smog... is there really any crate engine out there that will???
Well, visually, any small block will look the same so it would be hard for them to catch you on a visual unless they took numbers off of the block. I dont know as far as actually passing the sniffer. I do know that they are pretty strict out there. I dont know if there are any crate engines that are approved or not though. If there are you will definately need to keep all of your origional emissions equiptment. Maybe someone with more experience w/ cali emissions could help you more.

yeah, I have all my stock emissions stuff still in tact, my car is 100% stock except for the catback exhaust and the ecm chip. I have someone who could pass a small smog failure, but if it is too much, he wont do it
