what kind of vacuum pump? Like an evac pump for the crankcase? to make vacuum with the thing, you just run it counterclockwise.

I have never tried using the smog pump for vacuum but I did try to use it for forced induction at one time.

RJR yes it's for crankcase pressure or to evacuate it and provide a better ring seal.

I am also thinking of connecting a hose from a breather into my air filter assembly and try to draw vacuum at high rpm. What I am wondering now is if the increase airflow at high (wot) rpms would make enough vacuum to have that breather/pcv breather to draw gases back into the engine to burn off and provide a better piston ring seal.

I will try installing my new "vacuum " pump right tonight. Hopefully I am able to finish it .

I have often thought of doing this. My idea is to use an electric smog pump from a 4th gen.

The idea behind using it as a supercharger is what I have seen on go-kart engines. It provides enough boost for them.

I'd just be curious as to the actuall inches of vaccum these pumps would put out? It may not be enough to warrant the time and effort.

yeah...i know they sure dont blow much air, so i doubt they'd suck a lot.

I dont really know what the guy's application is though. On dragsters they can pick up around 20 hp through using an evac pump. I dont really know what they use for pumps though.

For street use i doubt you'd notice at all.

Might be easier to just to weld in some bungs for the cheap mans evac system.
Just for humors sake I do remember in HS taking the emission junk off my monte and running a hose from the emission pump into my breather. Hold on a second....I just got my next e-bay scam a riccer idea, supercharging. It runs off the engine like a real one so it just HAS to work right!! I gotta go, I'm gonna be rich, rich I tell ya!!

Some smog pumps have a line that goes to the breather though. It just dumps the air into the breather at high rpm, as it could create too much pressure in the exhaust.

I have seen a thread about this on the advanced tech board at camaroz28.com a while back. I think that they actually said that the pumps can create too much vacuum. I dont know if they are different between different cars, but they talked about underdriving them so they didnt create to much. I dont know if that is true, but I am pretty sure that is what they said.

Isnt noise a sign that the pump is about to seize??? They are usually quiet. Could make it suck in some oil to lub it.

Gumby it could be that the pump is trash I bought it at a*** zone! but then I know that a new smog pump can be noisy at first then it quiets down quite a bit. If I oil it I will void the warranty on it and I want to be able to take my smog back to a*** zone if it quits on me . If the noise continues I might just oil it anyway .

Also before I connect it to my crankcase I will install a vacuum release valve.

I cant believe I wasnt the only one!!! Here all this time...
It seemed logical to me a few years ago. Hey, it blows air right?

Hooking it into the breather wont do any good. You have too hook it up so it pulls air out of the crank case(via valve covers usually).

Well, I finally had everything set up vacuum hose and all but still the noise was there. It made an awful noise so I took that sucker out ! I still had the problem of my dip stick being pushed out at high rpms , so I go and check what I should have checked to begin with. I dicovered that my cheapo valver cover breather was clogged up. I tried blowing air through it and that's when I discovered my problem. So I decided to go with 2 "quality " type air breathers on one valve cover and a pcv on the other. Now I rev the egine and there is no dip stick blowing out . Now getting back to the smog pump conversion I would still recommend it if you really need it just get yourself a good smog pump. I did not measure the vacuum pulled other than putting my finger over the hose when it was at high rpms and its seemed to pull enough vacuum.
