stud girdles --- do i need one??

exactly when should i start considering getting one?

will it really help anything?

what is the diff between 2piece ones and 1 piece ones? (comp cams part numbers 4009 and 4001 )

the motor is a 400SB solid roller.. cam specs have not been chosen yet, but its going to be somewhere between .580 and .600 lift and lotsa duration... with a soild roller, the profile of the cam is going to be pretty harsh on the springs...
studs are ARP, 3/8", comp springs and guideplates...

i dont hear much talk about stud girdles.... anyone have some info to share? if its cheap insurance i need, i'll go for it, but if its unneeded, i wont.

I'm no expert, but the only people that I hear of getting stud girdles are drag racers or people who race a lot. They just give your valve train strength. They keep the studs from flexing. It looks like you have what I would consider to be a lot of lift. My opinion would be, if they are relatively cheap you might as well get them. Just make sure that your valve covers will clear them.

you need one when you run springs above a certin seat preasure and off the top of my head i don't know what it is, but it's a lot, like for a .700 lift solid roller.

so is getting one overkill for me right now?

on one hand, im running alot of lift and some stiff springs for a street car.

on the other hand, as far as the racing goes, i have a small cam.

i can forsee the girdle being a PITA when i go to adjust the lifters, but if it extends the life of my valvetrain at all, the $100-$200 could be worth it.. plus i would imagine that it would really keep the poly locks from coming loose at all.. lol.

other then valve cover clearance, and having to remove it for valve adjustment, is there any downside to having one?
if i get one, is the comp one worth the extra $100 over summits one that has the same design?

the two main stud sizes are 3/8 and 7/16... they're widely availible.... i listed the comp part numbers above..
Heres some others in for3/8" studs in summit

finding thems a non issue. its more of a "is this a waste of money for me or not" kind of question... *shrug*

On a street car I would get 7/16" studs & call it a day.

I think I would agree with Ricktpi, but if you get 7/16" studs, you need to buy new rockers and new guideplate. That way sounds a little more expensive that just buying the girdles. So you will probably spend like $200 on a set of girdles or you could spend $250 on full roller rocker arms (i'm assuming you would want full roller), then another $50 for guideplates. Your call.

I broke a rocker stud and it sucks, so I got the Crane stud girdle. It really didnt add much time to adjusting my valves. It looks good though .

I didnt have any problems after it, its just insurance to help at high RPM.
