Normal operating temp for engine oil?

As the title asks, what would be the normal operating temp be for engine oil? Thinking of maybe putting a gauge in along with a pyrometer for the exhaust temps.

Well, the Autometer Oil Temp gauge reads 100-250*, so I guess it should be in that range.

105-5747 Oil Temperature, 100° - 250°F | More Details $46.99

250°-260°F is a good target. Much over 325°F and mineral oil will break down FAST.

So, using the autometer gauge isn't a good idea since 250 is the max.

I don't5 know what gauge you have, but my Autometer oil temperature gauge is graduated to 340°, and there's a 350° dot beyond that (Autometer 2541).

I don't have one yet, I just looked at the specs at Jegs and that was the temp range in the description.

2541 isn't on summit's site anymore but I'm looking to get the 4348 model. Electric Ultra-lite gauge, 140-300 range. Thanks for the info

From all I've read 250 seems to be the highest you want your oil temp. Mineral oil starts to break down at 250 and synthetic breaks down somewhere higher than that.

Buy an electric guage. That way you can take your guage panel out without unhooking the temp sender from the oil pan. I have learned this the hard way and will be buying an electric oil temp and water temp guage soon.

Anyone know if the ultra lite electrics are full sweep? That is the only thing i hate about electrics, the 90 degree sweep. manuals have around 270 degrees of sweep.

Yup, they do make full sweep Ultra-Lite electric gauges, just checked their site. Dang, I like the look of those better than mine lol. Mine are also electric, easy to install

Yes, I am getting one of the full sweep oil temp gauges, they aren't making the full sweep water temp yet, so I'll have to use my mech until then. My mech oil temp gauge got damaged when I took the motor out this summer, so I have to get a new one of those. I can wait on the water temp until they come out.
