I just completed replacing the rear main seal on my 82 305. Of course, I had to also replace the oil pan gasket. I used the new one-piece fel-pro oil pan gasket. It's a huge improvement over the old 4 piece gasket set. However, I do have one problem. The new style gasket is much thicker. So, it spaced the oil pan further off the block enough to cause and interference with the exhaust Y-pipe. The pipe is in contact with the oil pan in two places (lower edges of pan). So, I'm planning on pulling the exhaust and getting out the hammer. I estimate the pan is 1/8 inch lower.

Can these oil pan gaskets be reused? I have one now, but will have the pan off again and am curious. Thanks.

Hey I had the same prob too. To answer the last question, Yes you can reuse the gasket since it is rubber. Just inspect it before you put it back in. Make sure there is no cuts, gouges or is not deformed to bad. Deforming shouldn't be a big prob because the fel-pro puts crush limiter into that particular gasket. Although you will have a little forming into the shape of the block and pan which is ok al long as its not too bad
