my car hates wet weather, why???
ok, any time that it rains, my car starts running real rough, like when I try to accelerate in 5th the whole car starts vibrating and stuff like that. I've got an LT1 in it and I first thought maybe its something in the computer program, but why? whats going on?

had an 89 oldsmobile that would do that, would also barely start in the rain, changed the plugs and wires and got rid of all problems

I guess I'll just change the wires because I changed the plugs when I swapped it, I remember reading something about LT1's having a problem with the distributor not sealing right and causing problems when it gets wet, could that be it?

From what I've heard the opti-spark ignition system on the LT1's is notorious for having problems in wet weather. My buddy has a 95 Formula, and his car runs really rough if he gets the engine too wet. I'm not sure what the cure for it is, but everyone says the opti-spark ignition system is the cause of it.

My GF had that same problem with her S10. I changed the plugs and wires and it still didn't work. Then I changed her coil pack and that did it.

well that wont help me because I don't have a coil pack. but I just figured out something else today, when it gets wet and starts running rough, I think it is because it is running rich. normally, I'll go about 200 miles on 12 gallons, toady I filled up and I went 175 on 13.5 gal, thats 13 mpg. now no one can tell me its not because it ran rich, right? any help yall can give me will help. anything to do to the opti-spark to help?

These things are not impervious to water, and aren't in the greatest location to prevent water splash. A replacement rotor and cap are about $140.00, not to mention all the parts and coolant and gaskets you'll need to get that far. See you next week....

are you serious> so you mean that to solve my problems I'm going to spend about $200 on a new cap and rotor, gaskets, and all that crap, plus going to have to pull just about every accessory off the front of the engine???!!! forget that, I'll just deal with it or not drive it in the rain! is there anyway to seal it up without damaging it? I know some things like that have all kinds of vent holes they need to work right so I don't know, is there any other way to fix it? just thought of something else, I think I remember reading something that they fixed the problem on the '96 and newer LT1s, if that is true, could I not just get the newer one and fix the problem? I don't know, it may just be wishful thinking

Yeah the early Opti-Sparks were famous for getting moisture in them. That's most likely your problem.
The later ones were much better about that, they redesigned some of the sealng aspects of it. Some of the Vette people have a routine to fix it, involving taking it off, drilling the weep holes out and putting some kind of vent thing or filter material in them, etc.
Good luck...
(Edit) I remembered what they do... they stick little plastic vacumm tees in the weep holes after they drill them out big enough to accept them; then hook them up to a source of engine vacuum. In fact the factory might even have adopted some kind of similar scheme; maybe one of th guys that works at a GM place like GMTech or somebody would know what change the factory made.
